Last night we were watching a Christmas movie and it involved a cabin rental and Vince and I started talking about cabins we’ve rented through the years. Our favorite vacations were the ones where we rented cabins in the woods. We were able to have our meals, fish, enjoy the quiet. There were some fun memories.
One cabin was at some town in north Georgia and we can’t even remember the name of the town. We went there for Christmas and I surprised Vince by having live lobsters delivered. It was actually the whole deal with clams and other critters. He was surprised . . he had been asking what we were having for Christmas dinner and I wouldn’t commit so once the lobsters were delivered, he understood why I hadn’t been enthusiastic about planning a big Christmas dinner. Speck was young and he was afraid of the stairs and wouldn’t try to go up them. At home, the stairs were carpeted but these were wood and he didn’t like them at all. As we were packing the car for the trip, Vince said “You are NOT taking that big Bernina sewing machine, are you?” Nope . . I’ll take a Featherweight but I wasn’t happy about it. We got there and that darned Featherweight would take about three stitches per minute. We messed with it . . Vince went and bought a set of tools to get it apart but couldn’t fix it. We were out doing something, stopped in an antique store and I picked up a 301 in a cabinet for $35. Then, instead of the BIG Bernina . . we had two sewing machines, a cabinet and a sewing stool. We call that the “lobster cabin”.
We rented a cabin in Ellijay, GA and it was a place I never wanted to leave. It was so nice, secluded and quiet. There was an old couple that lived down a little lane. They walked down to meet us. They were really old! They invited us back to their place for pie. Did someone say pie? We walked with them and poor old lady, every step she took, she let loose a little gas . . every step. Vince and I were trying so hard to not laugh. She and the old man never acted like they noticed. I’m not even going to tell you what we call that cabin but it had something to do with the lady and her gas. We went there two different times and if Chad lived closer to Georgia, those north GA mountains would be on our short list of retirement locations.
Then there was the cabin somewhere else in Georgia where friends came up to meet us, we all went to dinner and then they decided they were going to spend the night. There may have been a lot of wine involved and a hot tub . . we call that cabin the “hot tub cabin”.
There was a cabin somewhere in Indiana. Chad and Vince had a fishing guide, caught a ton of fish, got back and both declared they didn’t know how to clean the fish. I was out at the fish cleaning station til about 2 a.m. or later cleaning fish. We call that the “fish cabin”.
There was a cabin in Vermont. Tiny little cabin way out in the middle of nowhere. No internet. No TV and no air conditioning. It wasn’t Texas hot but it got a little warm. Speck made that trip with us. I think we left home, went here and there and were gone about five weeks.
The funny one was the cabin at Fall Creek Falls State Park in TN.
Vince: I don’t remember that one.
Me: Yes you do. The man and woman in the cabin next to us were from NY.
Vince: Nope. What did Chad and I do? Fish??
Me: Yes. Remember . . y’all were gone fishing and I unplugged a lamp and the cord came apart from the plug and sparks were flying and I had to call maintenance to come help me?
Vince: Nope . . totally do not remember that.
After talking about it, he said he kinda remembered
We’ve had some good memories and it’s fun to talk about them and laugh about some of those long ago experiences.

I remember a couple of cabins we rented but they weren’t what I’d call fond memories. I LOVED our trailer and motorhome..since they were ours, we knew them inside out and took them all over the country. There were great memories, some not so great but we went everywhere and saw so much. My favorite way to travel was pulling a trailer or riding in an RV (course it was DH doing all the driving).

We have great memories of cabin rentals in the Gatlinburg area…….so beautiful and peaceful. But, retirement and our boys and their families have now brought us to our own piece of heaven on earth in North GA…not far from Ellijay. We absolutely love it here.

We have had similar experiences! But it is refreshing to hear others have had those as well!

Those sound like great memories. I can never get used to Fall Creek Falls. It sounds so odd to me! LOL Everyone says it’s beautiful. I’ll have to go see sometime.

When you were at the one in VT, was that the same time as VT QuiltFest when we first met?
