Winter is here but it may be summer again next week . . that’s how things are in Texas.
It’s supposed to be 26 tonight, 22 tomorrow night and 25 Wednesday night. That’s cold for us, especially since it was 80° last week.
Our biggest concern is ice. It is supposed to rain today but it’s supposed to stop before the temps drop below freezing. If there’s no ice to take down power lines, we’re good . . no matter how cold it gets. Vince has done all pre-winter chores. Heaters are set up in the chicken coops. Heater is in the greenhouse. We take all those out in the spring and store them inside til the next winter. Firewood is on the porch if we have to use the fireplace. New lightbulb in the well house. Propane tanks are full. Gas cans are full. Generators have been tested. We only run those for the freezers and well pump. Faucets are drained and have covers over the ones that aren’t freeze proof.
I don’t know if you noticed the straw at the end of cat’s tree. That’s what we spread out across the driveway if there’s ice. We have to walk across to get to our cars, to the chicken feed and food for Boots and Cat. It can get very slippery where the water comes off the shop roof, pools and freezes so we learned early on to keep straw handy so we can walk across without slipping. We have plenty of kitty litter we could use if we had to but we keep straw around for other uses.
Those of you who live up north . . I know you have a whole lot more preps to get done than we do, and yours were probably done months ago but for us, it seems weird when we’ll have so few cold days but . . all it takes is one! So, bring it on. We are ready.

I live north of you and yes, am still in Texas. I’ve already had all the winter I want to have. That dang North Door can be shut, locked and barred. Might as well chink anything that looks like an air leak. Warm….I want warm temperatures without the drama of severe weather attached to its tail. Yes, the cold air makes me downright grouchy. Where is a hot flash when you need one?

Before I finished your post I was looking for the straw for Cat and could not figure out why Cat would need a straw. Then I saw it. Ohhh…STRAW!!!!! Got it. Teach me to read first. Oh well, chuckled.

Now that’s weird. I’m going to be warmer overnight than you are! Between now and Thanksgiving, the weather doesn’t show a single night where I’ll have to drip faucets! But it could change in an hour. You never know!
