They’re back! I was so hoping not to have them this Fall. Last year, they destroyed my kale and lettuce in what seemed like overnight. Texas definitely has its share of bugs and the bugs we have don’t come in pairs, they come in bus loads!
I was passing by an overgrown bed and looked down and said “Darn it . . you’re an Army worm!” and promptly did away with it. When I checked my phone, my friend had just sent me a picture of a handful they had picked off some of their plans and she said “The Army worms are back!”
I’ll be watching for more of them but hoping for an early freeze (I guess) so it kills them off. And, I’m hoping they aren’t out there waiting for my garlic to come up so they can have a yummy meal of garlic sprouts!

I just north of Dallas. They invaded this area too. My backyard looks dead from them. Now they have transformed to white moths. The grass will come back. They only eat the leaves not the roots or runners

My sister north of Dallas (McKinney) also has dead grass. Sad since they have had rain which means green but not this fall I guess.

Last year they kept my kale mowed down to the stems. The minute a little shoot would pop up, they would eat it. I haven’t seen them on the fruit trees but there are so many that by the time you see them, they’ve eaten every leaf. Last year was the first year we had them really bad and I don’t think they’re horrible yet this year but . . it’s not too late for them to be horrible.

Horrid little things! I did give myself a little giggle thinking about worms with garlic breath… So if a bird eats a worm that’s been eating garlic, will the bird have garlic breath? 🙂

Ugh, I hated the years they were big in Arizona, but I was happy it wasn’t very many. They are just nasty things. Why couldn’t it be something like Monarchs, which don’t do that kind of damage and are low in numbers now?

Maybe you could set up movable chicken pens that would allow them to hunt the worms?
