There are no pictures! Don’t get nervous.
We had chickens for at least two years in Missouri and we’ve had them over six years here. In those eight years, except for last year, only once had I ever found a snake in a chicken coop and it had killed one of my hens. You may remember last year that it seemed every time I went out to the coop, there was a snake in there. I killed 16 snakes inside the coop last year. Don’t get all pro-snake on me. I had a bunch of eggs just about to hatch and a snake got them all. Taking them out and moving them to a new location just creates a problem for someone else. There’s no shortage of snakes in Texas.
So . . 16 snakes in the coop last year. This year, so far not a single one and I hope snake season is coming to an end. There have been 3 rattlesnakes this year . . not inside the coops but one was on the back porch right by our back door and Vince stepped over it.
Early in the spring, I wondered how many snakes I’d have in the coop. Last year was one for the record books and I was not looking forward to going through that again so I’m happy we didn’t have to deal with them again this year.
Isn’t it weird that some years are so much different from others? Remember the first summer we were here and we had grasshoppers as big as my hand? Glad we haven’t had such a bad infestation of those things again. We always have a few but nothing like that year.
Probably as soon as I post this, I’ll find a snake in the coop! Hope not!

When I lived in NM we ate the rattlers. Very good grilled. No meat went to waste when we were struggling college students. A big change of life for this New Englander. I do miss NM.

It was in October when my Chihuahua was bitten by a rattlesnake. With good two vets and lots of prayer Yoda survived with on a scar on his head. It’s too early to call an All Clear. I’m about six hours NW of you and we never let our guard down.

This was my year for snakes in the coop! I became one nervous lady when I had to open the coops.

I’m glad you haven’t had them again, and this wasn’t a post of finding another one. I do remember all the grasshoppers!

I live in a suburban neighborhood in Florida and I had six snakes in my pool this year, all in a two week period. Rescued them and put them in the nearby woods. I lived in Texas in the mid-80s and we had a bloom of crickets one year. You’d go to the bank or grocery store and they were thick in the lobby, what a mess as people stepped on thousands of them.

oh my gosh, I remember that year! I was teaching in a brand new school. So many got tracked in, they had to come in and replace the carpet because of the stench. The sidewalks, parking lot, everything was covered and we couldn’t take the kids out for recess for days.

I have seen way more snakes than usual this year. (just in the yard). Some years I don’t see any, and this year I’ve seen 6 or 7. Ick!
