Yesterday Vince decided to do something with the aging ham! I guess he was tired of my constant complaining. I know it’s petty and he could be doing a whole lot worse but every time I opened that fridge, it aggravated me. It was past time to do something with it or get rid of it.
I didn’t know he was messing with it. I was baking cookies. He walked in and said “It smells so good!” I said “The cookies?” No .. the ham. This is one of those instances where, no matter how bad it tastes, he’s going to swear it’s the best thing ever . . just to prove I was wrong for wanting to toss it. Men and their hams! 🙂
He took it out and started soaking it. It needs to soak about 36 hours, with water changes every 4 – 6 hours. He has it sitting in a cooler on a table outside.
I already told Vince I am not eating mummified ham!
Last night I suggested he put a big rock on top of the cooler because some critter might try to get it, especially since I’d already promised it to the coyotes! He put a big landscape brick on top of the cooler.
We had the windows open last night and I woke up to some crazy scratching noises. Vince had left a light on outside to hopefully keep critters away. I got up and looked out the window and I swear . . it was a small bobcat. He had really pointed ears and was kinda spotted. I tried as quietly as I could to awaken Vince but the cat had already heard me. He looked in my direction . . he was probably about 8′ from the window, and he jumped down and ran into the woods.
Dang it . . I should never have mentioned putting a rock on that cooler. He would have gotten the nasty ham and been gone with it and Vince would never have heard anything!
Tonight we’re going to put a trail cam out there and see what we get.

My hubby keeps saying he wants a bobcat as a pet! LOL!! We have lots of moles around in our yard and he thinks it would take care of the problem. Not sure that’s a good enough reason to try to keep a bobcat on the property!!! 🙂

I think your “ham story” is your best story yet!
Sara Fridley says
Too funny!! There is no way I would feel safe about eating that ham, but maybe the bobcat knows better.

If i had to look at that ham every time I opened the freezer, I would want it gone too. lol.

I agree don’t eat the ham, that doesn’t look good at all. My husband is the same, will eat stuff I was about to throw away. I have to clear out the fridge when he’s not around. Personally I’d rather throw a few dollars of food into the garbage and be on the safe side, food poisoning is a miserable experience (and potentially dangerous).

That is too funny!! The ham does sortof look mummified! Please take a picture when it’s cooked. 🙂

He probably went back and told his friends and they will all show up tonight!
Pat says
Don’t wake Vince tonight. Let the critters have the ham. Looks ruff. You could accidentally knock the brick off the cooler. You know how accident prone you are.
Diana Stewart says
Hate to yell you nut but we never had a problem eating Galen’s Dad ‘s cured hams and shoulders.
Helen from NE Ohio says
That is one scary ham and I wouldn’t eat it, either!
Helen from NE Ohio says
I’m with you, Judy! I wouldn’t eat that ham. Also, you are to be commended…I would have thrown that thing away after one warning!! 🙂

I am with Pat, let the critter have the critter ham. I would even open up the container for it. Just think about how much ham there is going to be when he gets it cleaned up and sliced. It will be in the fridge another year or so. You might suggest that all that salt curing is not good for his heart. Good luck.

There you go helping again, suggesting putting a brick on the lid. lololol

Well … now you know what draws a Bobcat!
