Today is Saturday, right? Some days, retirement is much harder than other days. Today . . a hard day!
Give me the best computer out there and in about two months, I’ve screwed things up. My notebook has been taking forever to wake up and half the time . . no . . 3/4 of the time, I have to completely turn it off and wait for it to get going again, which also means signing back on to the internet. And, about 3/4 of those times, I have to go through this twice to get it going . . and that’s almost every time it goes into sleep mode and I want to use it again. Right or wrong, I use my computer all.the.time!
Yesterday, finally, after much complaining and huffing and puffing every time I have to do this, Vince said “Give it to me. I’ll work on it.” Thank you! He kept it about an hour and the only thing I could tell that was different was that all my computer forgot all my passwords that it had been remembering!
This morning, I used it, put it back on the table by my chair, 10 minutes later went to look up something and had to reboot it THREE times before it started working again. Vince and I discussed what might be wrong. This computer is probably not a year old. Vince said “This happens with every computer you use!” Yes . . it does . . fix it! 🙂
The computer was telling me there’s a problem with two programs and I need to remove those two things. Great . . I use those programs every day . . quite often. For one of the programs, Vince said “You can still use it on the internet. It doesn’t have to be resident on your computer. Yes, we could still eat without a kitchen but I don’t see us getting rid of that! But, I did what it told me to do . . deleted the two programs. Then . . reboot again! That was four times before 8 a.m. I’m having to bite my tongue just to keep from saying “Can I please just have a new computer?” He knows that’s what I’m thinking because he’s reading me the deals online about new computers . . trying to bait me into saying that I would like a new computer. Then, he would go into his spiel about me ruining every computer I get and then he would mention the budget . . which both of us are failing miserable at following.
But . . I outsmarted him and didn’t mention wanting a new computer. By the time my computer was back on and back connected to the internet, I looked at Vince and said “I forgot what it was I wanted to look up on Google!” He looked at me and I know he was thinking . . this is what retirement is going to be like! I’m thinking the same thing. I used to sit here and complain about my computer and no one was here to hear it and better yet . . no smart response!
All that . . and I don’t even remember what I was fixing to do on the computer. By the time I remember, it will be back in sleep mode and if, after removing the two programs it told me to remove, it still doesn’t easily wake up, I’m going to mention the new computer . . which is going to get me nowhere but I will have to hear the “You ruin every computer you touch!” speech all over again.
Yes, we are adjusting to retirement . .

This is why we keep all of our computers on a Geek Squad service contract. Costs about $100 a year. They can fix most things over the phone (taking control of the computer briefly). We wouldn’t have a computer without Geek Squad!!!!!!

Judy, can’t you change the amount of time before it goes to sleep mode? I can on my computer. I had been having trouble with not being able to save a downloaded file. Googled it and the update to Microsoft 10 doesn’t like my brand of computer. More specifically, one app from that computer company. I deleted it and everything works again. I am not tech savvy but the solution was laid out in basic steps I could follow. Maybe yours is something that simple.

I can but that doesn’t change the fact that something isn’t right or it wouldn’t have so much trouble waking up. Even if I set it to not go into sleep mode for an hour, I’m going to have to deal with it, just not as often. So far, it seems that removing the two programs it told me to remove has helped. We’ll see what the rest of the day brings.

Try shutting your computer off every night and rebooting it in the morning. Windows really does like to be shut down & rebooted regularly. Download and install Ccleaner and run it at least once a week. It cleans out all the crap that collects on your computer just from doing regular things. If all else fails you can reset the computer without losing your files. If that doesn’t work, save your files to a USB drive and totally reinstall Windows. And if none of that works have a serious talk with your computer, tell it you’re putting it out in the driveway and driving the car over it a few times! LOL (Seriously, I’ve threatened mine & it’s still going after four years so it must work, right?)

I always shut it down at night. We back up the computers several times a week so I wouldn’t lose anything. Vince has a cleaner on it but it’s set to run automatically and I don’t have to run it myself.

Alicia bought me a 64 terabyte HP Pavilion. It was only around $300 and we got it at Walmart. I am enjoying it but there was nothing wrong with my old one either! LOL She just wanted to do something nice for us. I will have to tell you about where she got the money next time I see you.
If you have computer problems or want something fixed. We use Victor Storey. He does not charge a lot and he is fast. He knows what he is doing and is busy most of the time. We always use him. Pat trusts him completely.
But if he insists on a new one, hey go for it!! LOL
Judy Laquidara says
Vince can fix anything . . it’s just getting him to do it.

That is a very annoying situation. I know why mine requires rebooting when it gets tired – it doesn’t have enough RAM, but it has all it CAN have, and I can’t get a new computer, so I just have to gripe … but there’s no one to hear me, so it’s okay. It isn’t windows, so that’s one blessing. LOL

It is where you live, Judy. You know you would not have these problems in Missouri especially close to a certain grandchild.
Judy Laquidara says
I think you’re onto something there. I’m going to try that argument with Vince!
