Yesterday while looking at new patterns on Ravelry, I came across Throwback by Andrea Mowry. I love so many of her patterns and I love this one. I seem to love too many patterns these days. I bought it and then I went to look at the kits that were for sale. They’re expensive. Most yarns seem to be outrageously expensive these days. Maybe it’s the retirement budget that one of us seems to be trying to live by! Maybe it’s knowing I have more yarn than I’ll ever use. Who knows! I did almost convince myself to order a kit because . . you know . . the colors are so gorgeous. Then I noticed that they’re going to begin shipping in late September. The KAL starts September 21. My best chance of finishing within the KAL time frame is if I start on Day 1. So, that’s when I went stash diving.
The first yarn I came across that would work is this Madelinetosh Vintage in the Moss colorway. I love green . . especially this shade of green. According to the pattern requirements, I need pretty much every bit of 6 skeins but, the patterns always seem to have a good bit of padding but, what if this pattern doesn’t have a lot of extra yarn added in so I’d feel more comfortable having 7 skeins. I have no idea why I have this Moss yarn but I have 11 skeins of it. I hate to use 6 and leave 5, or use 7 and leave 4. But, to use the stash, I figured I’d do it.
Then I needed three other colors . . one skein each. I rarely buy one skein of Madelinetosh Vintage but I knew I had a tub that had a few single skeins.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had two packs of three single skeins. It must have been some time when Eat, Sleep, Knit was selling orphan skeins or something like that.
Then . . I saw 7 skeins of citrus. It’s a horribly bright orange but I love it!
Above is the combo with the citrus, a shade of very light minty blue and a skein of a medium blue and one skein of the moss.
Here it is with the same citrus, blues and a purple-ish brown. I think I might like this combo better.
For a brief moment, I said to myself . . you’re a granny. That orange is a bit bright. But then I decided that’s ok. When I’m old, I can wear this sweater and everyone will see me coming and watch out for me.
Which combo should I use? The one with the moss or the one with the purple-brown?
Carolyn says
Choose the one that makes you instantly smile. It’s the one that makes your heart sing.
Mary says
Purple-brown. It’s a prettier combo. You asked!
Dot Murdoch says
I like the one with the Purpley/Brown……But its your project, use what makes you happy…..?D
Karen says
Tough choice – I like them both. I agree with Carolyn – which one puts a smile on your face:)
Liz says
I like the purple option. And you can wear the sweater during hunting season if you are walking in the woods!
Joyce in Oregon says
Judy, you’ve done it again! I love both options — the moss is subtle, the purplely/brown pops. Guess we’ll know your mood on the day you pick the colors, PS – I love that the orange stays no matter what!
Laura Haywood says
I like the moss combo, although I think either one works well.
Jill McCaughey says
“And when I am old, I shall wear purple” comes to mind! My favourite colour is orange, then lime green, so I have no problem with your choices for this project! Orange is the new black? Jill in Calgary/Phoenix

Flip a coin–and see how happy or disappointed you are with the result. If you have no reaction, go with the winner. (I like the moss green and definitely keep that orange!) That’s a great pattern.
Ann Duncan says
I like orange; it’s one of my favorite colors. When I thought of a sweater made with that orange, my first thought was you could wear it outside during hunting season. 😉
Nelle Coursey says
I like them both but I prefer the moss. You go ahead and wear the orange! don’t you remember the poem “And when I am old I shall wear purple and red” That’s how the Red Hat Society was formed!
Penny says
I can’t decide either but I do love the orange yarn!! l am a quilter but I do so love all the yarn pics ~ always so beautiful to see!

I’m not sure which is better. I do know this, though. In that sweater, you’d be at home in Knoxville during the fall football season because that’s the UT orange! LOL
