Machines will come and go but the Bernina 1230 will forever be my favorite machine. I mostly use the Singer 301 for piecing quilt tops but this old Bernina makes my heart sing.
I left it here when I was here the last time because I knew I’d need this time. As I was opening the case, I found myself saying “I’ve missed you!”
I have a Bernina 430 that I bought in 2010 and even though it has more bells and whistles, it will never be my favorite.
The 1230 has stickers on it that Chad put on when he was 3 or 4 years old. When I showed them to Addie the last time I was here, she insisted on adding a few of her own stickers. Those make this machine special but even without the memories from the stickers, it’s still my all time favorite machine.
Time to start sewing on flower girl dresses. I don’t mind making them but I will be happy when they’re finished!

Can’t wait to see the dresses when they are finished. What pattern are you using and how many are you making? Nice memories for sure!

I feel the same way about my Bernina 440QE. I’d fight anyone who wanted to take it away. Bernie and I have played lots of happy hours together and we still have a lot of playing time left in us. Enjoy your days of hearing yours sing to you.

Nice machine and very nice home! Glad you are having a wonderful time! Thanks for sharing the photos and Addies first days of school! She was certainly happy! George was so cute with her in the car! Have a nice day Judy!

My Bernina Record 930 is the love of my life! Don’t tell my husband I said that!

I made a flower girl dress for my son’s wedding and the flower girl stepped on the front of the dress and ripped the skirt from the bodice. I was mortified when I walked into the bathroom and found the wedding planner/organizer hand sewing the skirt to the bodice by hand. To her credit, she didn’t make a big deal out of it and waved me off when she saw the look of horror on my face (she knew I made the dress). So, double stitch your bodice!!
Judy Laquidara says
These are actually triple stitched so I don’t see them coming undone. I gathered and stitched the skirt to the bodice, then gathered and stitched the lining so that was a double stitch for the skirt/bodice, then zig zagged through all the layers (and wished I had brought my serger). They may tear the fabric but I don’t believe the stitching will let go.

My Bernina 1230 is my newest machine. I bought it Feb. 3, 1990! I use it all the time. In 2011 a part below the feed dogs broke and had to be replaced. The light switch that no longer worked was replaced at the same time. The machine has run just fine every since. I have several vintage Singers (including a 301) to use as backups.

That’s about when I bought my 1230. We moved to Jasper, TX in 1999 and hadn’t been there but a few months when I bought the 1230 from the local Bernina shop there. I still have my 930 but haven’t used it in years.

That was a great line of Berninas and if I had bought one, I’d still be using it, too. I bought the Viking 500 I have instead, and … I’m still using it. I have an Alex Anderson QE I bought 2nd hand from someone who preferred … guess what? Her old 1230! I like it, but the Viking will always be my favorite machine – partly because of sentimental things, like you and the 1230. My husband used it, my best friend used it … it’s traveled everywhere in the country with me for 20+ years. My brain just understands it best. I’m glad you have it to sew on at Nicole’s, but I don’t know how you managed to leave it behind for so long! =)
