One thing about the keto diet, aside from not being able to drink Dr. Pepper, I’m able to eat things I like so it isn’t a hard diet/way of eating to follow.
At lunch, I heated up leftover steak, sauteed okra in coconut oil and olive oil, sliced mozzarella and cucumbers. Vince used two slices of bread and put his steak on the bread to make a sandwich. He had his knife to cut the sandwich in half. I jokingly said to him . . “I’m about to the point where I would stab you with the knife and take that sandwich!” He said “If you’re at that point, you’d better just eat a slice of bread!” Nope, I’m not at that point yet but you might want go outside to eat the carb filled foods that I love. 🙂
Full Disclosure: I drank a Dr. Pepper yesterday. I woke up, had a headache, went back to bed and slept for about half an hour, got up without the headache but had what y’all have described as a “fog”. I just couldn’t get going and felt like I could sit in my chair and stare out the window all day. We had breakfast and I still couldn’t get moving so I said “I’m having a Dr. Pepper!” I did. I had one. It tasted heavenly and now I’m done for another couple of days.
Here’s how I look at it (and don’t anyone take advice from me!): If I’ve been drinking 3 – 5 cans of Dr. Pepper every day, along with eating at least two slices of bread, and some days having ice cream, pasta, etc., having one DP every three days may set me back a little but it isn’t going to blow the diet.
Without bread and Dr. Pepper, I’m kinda struggling to get in the carbs.
Weight Loss: Even with the Dr. Pepper yesterday, in three days, I’ve lost 3.2 pounds. The first week, the pounds will seem astronomical but that’s because of the Dr. Pepper I’m not drinking.
This includes everything I plan to eat today.
Lunch:
- Egg yolks
- Bacon
Lunch:
- Sirloin steak
- Okra
- Mozzarella cheese
- Cucumber Slices
- Bone broth
Dinner/Snack:
- Salama
- Cheese Stick
- Sauerkraut w/ chia seeds
Adding ONE medium fig will put me at 15 net carbs.
I’m low on fat but right on target for net carbs, protein and pretty close on net calories. I’d like to get the fiber up to about 20 grams per day but I’m calling today good.

Judy, when I did Atkins, I had the “low carb flu” too. Felt horrible with no energy and brain fog. I did some reading on it and discovered that broth helps restore all the electrolytes you are losing quickly as the diet is kind of a diuretic also. Broth made me feel so much better within minutes. Hubby and I are going back on low carb starting Tuesday so I am excited to see your meals as inspiration. I discovered that once over low carb flu, I felt better than in years on low carb diet. The standard American diet just has way too much sugar in it to be healthy. Wishing you tons of luck with it.

I am replying to your answer here as I don’t really know how to reply to your reply. I am totally low-tech. I drank about a cup of chicken broth made with a boullion cube. I tried to remember to do this everyday. It’s funny how people react differently to the diet. My husband never gets the low carb flu but I always do. I have a lot of trouble with muscle aches especially in my legs and what I discovered on low carb is that completely disappears. Though I absolutely love bread, it is amazing how all those cravings go away after a few days. I downloaded the carb tracker you are using and I think that will be a really helpful tool. The other thing that I have discovered are Atkins shakes and Atkins granola bars. They are delicious and still keep you in ketosis.
I want to thank you for all the cooking advice you give. I have been reading your blog for probably five years and enjoy it so much!

I tried replying back as an email. Have had trouble with those going through so if you don’t get that, let me know and I will stick with using this thread.

I would eat half of Nature Valley protein bar that didn’t have peanuts in it when I was low on carbs and also almond or cashew butter from Aldi’s. I was trying to lower my triglycerides and I did by almost 375 points. I couldn’t function on 15 carbs so I tried for 20 or less and still lost weight. Once in a while I would have 1/2 a Lara Bar cashew cookie. It only has cashews and dates nothing else. That was my treat just once in a while (maybe every 2 weeks) It won’t take you long to find what works for you.

Saw a friend over the weekend who is on the Keto diet for fatty liver issues. He said the hangover feeling lasted for about a week, then he was over it. He’s gone on to lose 20 pounds so far in about 4 months. He’s looking good and is very happy with his results. His first 60 days were absolutely no carbs, then he was able to add in small amounts…which he adds with beer, wine or a good quality scotch! Wishing you great success!

I definitely would not recommend a zero carb diet unless under strict care of your physician. I was looking it up and found that Dr. Axe said “While theoretically you could eat very close to no carbs — such as from only consuming things like meat, oils or lard — this is not exactly a very healthy way to eat.”
20 pounds in four months is great and I wish him continued success.

Looks like a good variety in your food, which is important for sticking with anything.

Adding some berries would increase your carbs, they are really good with heavy cream over them?
