Before we got this air conditioner that communicates via wifi, I would never have thought we would use that feature as much as we do. We can be sitting in the living room, 10 steps from the thermostat, and Vince will say “I’m warm” and I’ll grab my phone or iPad and change the thermostat. We have it programmed so in the winter when we don’t use the heat at night, it was set to come on at 5:30 a.m. but now that Vince isn’t working, we just turn the heater on from a phone or tablet before we get out of bed. If we’re gone for a few days and have the a/c set up high, when we get about 10 miles from home, we turn the a/c down with the phone.
So, two weeks ago when Carrier had an update or whatever they called it, our thermostat was one of the “few” according to Carrier that didn’t work right. You would have thought they had turned off our unit completely. We were lost without or remote access. We’d be sitting here. One of us would say “It’s warm in here” and the other would say “It’s your turn to get up and fix it!” . . no . . I did it last . . it’s your turn! 🙂 Unfortunately, I’m always the one who’s hot so I would be the one to get up and fix it.
This morning, I walked by the thermostat and noticed that the “Not Communicating” error message was not on the thermostat. I grabbed my phone and tried to change the temp and yes . . it’s working again!
Remembering back when my grandparents didn’t even have a window unit in their house and knowing how happy they would have been for just the smallest bit of cool air, I feel a bit spoiled that the lack of wifi on our thermostat was causing so many issues around here. It really wasn’t . . two weeks without it and we were almost used to hever having had it.
Someone had asked me and I don’t know if I ever responded . . if our internet isn’t working, we can still use our air conditioner but . . horrific as it may sound . . we’d have to walk to the thermostat to make any adjustments. 🙂

I used to call my husband at work to let him know if I was hot or cold. Then he would adjust it with his phone. I kept telling him I didn’t know how to work the new thermostat (new Carrier A/C). After about a year, he took me over to the thermostat on a Saturday morning when I complained and gave me a lesson! Dang it! Now I have to do it myself.
I’ve been getting emails from Carrier about every 6 minutes since 9:26 this morning telling me that the units Auxiliary Input (G) shutdown. It keeps saying URGENT. My a/c people are finally on their way. Wonder what an Auxiliary Input (G) is? The a/c is still working and I’m still nice and cool.

Remember when we had to walk across the room to change the channel on the TV?
