A reader asked if I had fussy cut the stars in the Celebration of Freedom quilt. She knows me well enough to know that, even though I think applique is beautiful, I’ve never completed a project that involved even the smallest amount of applique.
Yes, Rebecca, the stars were fussy cut from the Moda Challenge fabric of 2005. It’s “We The People” by Sandy Gervais. I’ve always loved her lines. Obviously, even back in 2005, I was buying too much fabric. I still have between 4 and 5 yards of this piece left.
The stars were fussy cut. It only takes 14 for the quilt top.
Looking at the rows of bunting type design, I’m wondering if I could use those as a border and leave off the pieced border. Probably not. I think it’s against all that I believe in to have a quilt without at least one pieced border.
Any thoughts? The bunting fabric section instead of this pieced border?
As Addie would say . . I’m the boss of this blog so it will probably be the pieced border but I’d still like to hear your thoughts.

Oh, Oh, Oh!! I’d lay out the bunting and see how that changes the look of the whole quilt! I love curves, and the bunting would make such an interesting addition to the quilt.

i THINK COMMENT THING IS MESSED UP AGAIN.
I had written post and it deleted it when I hit notify via email.
I have 2 very old quilts from my great grandmothers. Both are red, white and blue themed solids. I love the bunting material so maybe do some of both on yours. Addie will enjoy down the road which every you decide. Oh I’ve got one also that my dear mother in law made for me. I need to digs these out and display this time of the year. Take for the reminder.

I love the bunting fabric! Wow just gorgeous I never saw that or would have scooped some of that up! Use that as it’s different and makes the quilt even more memorable! Whatever you do it will be gorgeous!!!

The Bunting section might be interesting as one of the borders…..???D..

Use the bunting as one of your borders.
Cilla Tyler says
Using the bunting as the last border would give the quilt a beautiful scalloped edge.
Edna says
What if you used the bunting in the pieced border? Keep the dark blue triangles and use the bunting like fans in between where the tan and red bordered squares are???

I loved the pieced border. Is the bunting wide enough to replace the outer blue border? Easy to lay out and see what you think. 🙂

Cut strips of it for the final border?

Judy – have you ever imported a fabric photo into EQ? You could do that and then get an idea of how it would look in your design.
Teri says
You could always use the bunting fabric on the back…..

If it has to be one or the other, I vote for the pieced border; but if I were boss of this quilt I might try the bunting as the outer border as suggested by others

I was wondering what you would do with the bunting stripes as soon as you showed the fabric. Since you like to do multiple borders, could you do the pieced border, some solid strips, and the bunting as one of the borders?

I like the piece border but I am not the quilter! Addie is right, you are the boss of this blog and you can do it however you want to do it. I know either way it will be beautiful!
