Do you have any idea how good it feels for me to have to tear myself away from the sewing machine. It’s 1:10 p.m. here and if we’re having dinner tonight,, I have to go cut the bone out of the pork butt, slice it up and get it cooking. Hmmm .. wonder which restaurants have specials on Monday? Nelle? You know everything about this town! Help me out here.
No, I’m going to go do what I need to do . . get dinner in the oven and come back but I’m making progress on these units.
Bad quilter! Look . . I cut the points off those triangles. It’s ok . . it’s just the photo.
One quick story and then I’ll go cook.
There was a little ice cream shop in Nevada (MO) and Addie just loved it. Any time there was something special . . Chad stepped on her foot or she threw up and felt better .. no matter what the occasion, it merited a trip to the ice cream shop. Not this past time but the time before that, I got there in time to get her at day care (yes .. . Vince wasn’t with me and I didn’t have to make a dozen stops along the way!). I told her I’d pick her up and we’d meet dad at the ice cream shop because I didn’t know where their house (the rental) was and didn’t trust a 5 year old to get me there.
When I walked in, I had my doubts about the longevity of the ice cream shop. It was a mom and dad and three or four little kids, one being an infant, who owned/ran the ice cream shop. Of course, Addie had made friends with the kids and she thought it was the best place ever.
When I went back . . sad news . . the ice cream shop had closed. Poor Addie . . in her mind, they closed for the night and never went back. Heck, I don’t know . . that may be how it happened. Addie was so worried that if someone didn’t buy the ice cream shop soon, all the ice cream was going to be ruined. I tried to tell her that the people probably took it all home with them and ate it. No . . it was too much to take home. Well, maybe they had a half price sale and sold it all before they closed. Nope, not buying that either. It was right there on main street and every single time we passed it, with so much sadness, she would say “Granny? Don’t you wish someone would buy the ice cream shop?” Honestly, Addie, I liked it better when it was a donut shop but donuts, or ice cream . . either one is fine with me.
When Addie found out Vince had retired and she understood that he was no longer going to work . . you know what’s coming! “Oh, Grumps, can you PLEASE buy the ice cream shop and let Granny work there?” Be careful what you ask for, child! There was no way to make her understand that an ice cream shop in Nevada was probably not a good investment. I guess until the day someone buys that shop or puts something else in there, she’s going to grieve every time she passes and hound Vince to buy the ice cream shop.
As I look at these blocks, I do think this quilt needs an ice cream related name but I’m not sure Addie can handle that. It might be a constant reminder in her bedroom that the ice cream shop closed and Grumps wouldn’t buy it.
OK . . forget the “quick” part of that story. 🙂

You are too funny! Quick or not I love the story! Cherish each memory. I am so thrilled you are sewing again, and for Addie! I too am sewing for a granddaughter, a wedding quilt. Lots of memories but much less time spent with her these days, so the memories run like a movie in my mind! But no buying an ice cream shop!

Actually I am not a good one to ask about specials of the day! LOL Since we don’t eat out much any more, I have lost touch. The only one I know about is Cotton Patch and I think you said Vince didn’t like that. I think Section Hand is closed on Mondays, but we don’t go there either since the parents died, Ok, this may be a first when I don’t nave the answers! LOL Good Luck!
