Vince was almost as convinced as I was that we needed a freeze dryer. I’ve been having so much fun freeze drying the fruits and junk food but with this last load of real food, I’ll admit to having been a bit nervous about how it was going to taste. Thoughts kept running through my head . . what if Vince doesn’t like it at all? What if it really tastes bad?
This afternoon I stuck potatoes in the solar oven and baked those outside.
Getting more nervous by the minute, I placed a couple of pieces of freeze dried crack chicken in a bowl.
Then I crumbled it with my hands a bit.
Then I poured about 1/2 cup of boiling water over it.
It was rehydrated completely in probably less than one minute. I had planned to place a plate over the bowl so the steam would help it rehydrate. That wasn’t even necessary. It sat for a few minutes and the sauce became thick enough that I added another 1/2 cup of water.
Then we did our taste test. Both of us think it tastes exactly like it did the day I made it. If I had been given a bowl from the day we first had it, and a bowl of rehydrated freeze dried, I don’t think I would be able to tell the difference.
So, baked potatoes with rehydrated crack chicken . . that’s what we had for dinner.
We were very happy with our first meal real food from the freeze dryer.

How exciting, Judy! That’s even better than what you buy from big companies, then. I’m so pleased that it worked so well. Your potatoes look delicious.

Now I really AM jealous!! I got an advertisement from the company that makes the freeze dryer, and there’s no way on earth we’ll ever be able to afford it. Oh well. One day, if I ever win the lotto, I’ll buy one. (Now i just have to start playing the lotto.)

Yay! There’s a member on the canning FB page I go to that regularly posts about her freeze dryer, and I think they sound wonderful! I’m glad to know you liked your chicken! Please let us know what else you try and how it turns out!

Yay!!! That’s awesome…although I will never have a freeze dryer, I’m amazed at how invested I’ve become in the results of the food coming from yours! So happy it worked out for you and that Vince is happy with it! Money well spent!

Looks yummy! Good to know that the taste stays. Seems like an excellent idea. I have a hard time cooking small. I think it would be worth it to me to freeze dry meals for later. Then I wouldn’t have to eat the same things for a week ….hahahha you laugh but it happens! Just freezing it doesn’t last for long when you consider preserving the flavor. Something to consider.
Thanks
