I usually keep a buttermilk starter going and continue making our own but when we were gone to MO for 10 days, I didn’t make any. When we got home, I didn’t make it for a few more days and figured I should start with fresh buttermilk and haven’t been to the store that has buttermilk I like.
I was telling Vince that I want to try making powdered buttermilk.
Me: You know how people use powdered buttermilk in salad dressing and baking mixes? I think I’m going to try it. I’ll need to buy some buttermilk.
Vince: You don’t need to buy any . . remember how good it is when you make your own?
Me: Yes, but I didn’t make it when we were in MO and it went too long so I need to buy more buttermilk for a starter.
Vince: But why would you buy buttermilk when you can make your own?
Me: Because I have to start with storebought for the cultures. I have to buy buttermilk to get started.
Vince: Exactly!
I guess that’s settled. I’m 100% sure that when I ring home a half gallon of storebought buttermilk, he’s going to say “I thought you were going to make your own!”
I shouldn’t talk. I just went outside to get something out of his car. In order to open the back hatch, you have to either use the remote or hit a button near the bottom of the dash. I hit the button, and didn’t even realize I had opened the gas tank lid instead of the hatch. Vince closed it and said “Try again!” I reached back in and hit another button and the hood popped open. I won’t even tell you what he said. He closed the hood and said said “Try again!” I said “Third time’s the charm!” and I got it. In my defense, I have not driven that car in probably 8 years.

I make butter when I can get raw milk but not from storebought cream or anything like that.

Have you tried milk kefir? I got some grains recently and my first batch tasted like creamy buttermilk! I’m going to try straining it for kefir cheese tonight. I let this current batch go a little longer for more tang and added some goat’s milk to try for a rich cheese. It’s like a science experiment, and nobody I know personally has tried it – but it’s fun to experiment and be the mad scientist!
