My most favorite and least favorite day of the year. I love that this is the longest day of the year, only because it means the days will now begin to get shorter. I love the shorter days when the chickens are up early, our outside chores are done and we’re inside early and we have plenty of time for watching movies (or football), knitting, sewing – whatever.
WIth the long days, we’re out working our butts off til dark. The chickens aren’t in til almost 9. Our days are long and the longer the days, the more sunshine and the hotter it feels.
Along with summer solstice comes the first day of summer. My goal this year is not to complain about summer but dang . . it’s hot and I do not like summer. I’ll be so glad when it’s over . . and today is just the first day! But, I’m not complaining but I’ll be very happy when the end of September gets here!
So, let’s get through this long day and start enjoying some shorter days!

I feel just the opposite. Knowing the days will be getting shorter saddens me. I thrive in the NE sun, even humidity. I’m more outgoing, more willing to leave the house on the spur of the moment invite. Winter I do not want to go anywhere after dark….it’s really an effort to get me to go. I do believe I was a bear in a past life. Grumpy in the winter when awoken, happy sitting in the veggie garden picking my meal.

My feelings also in the Great Lakes area – I guess we are heavily influenced by where we live and what our year-round weather is. I am so NOT a winter person!

I’m like Cilla. Always looked forward to the Winter Solstice because I could enjoy a few more minutes of daylight each day. Before I retired, I hated driving 45 minutes to and from work in the dark!

I’m with Judy. I can do without summer. I can’t wait for daylight savings to be long gone. I can’t wait for it to be cool enough to sleep with the doors and windows open. I can’t wait for Oct. 1st to roll in and temps will return to the 90’s.

I so dislike the shorter days of winter. Gray skies and shorter hours of sunlight make me blue. I have to fight to stay upbeat and the hubby is worse than me. He suffers from SAD and it’s so hard for him (and hard for me as the woman who loves him and hates to see him depressed).

I dont like the short days……but I dont like what the longer days represent! My favorite time of year it fall – warm days and cool nights…..I do not like summer, well, not where I am living now…..looking forward to our move next year where the summer will be bearable! And instead of going to the coast for natural AC we can leave the coast for natural heating!
but the one I hate the most of all is spring…..talk to anyone with allergies and they will agree! LOL
Judy Laquidara says
Unless you live in Texas and then you have allergies all year because there’s always some kind of weed blooming. I like Fall best because that means it’s a long time til Summer!
Carol says
totally agree

I love Fall, too. I endure Summer…but I think disliking Summer is one of the reasons I love Fall so much! Winter makes me so happy to see Spring, and Summer makes me love Fall. So, if you think about it, it’s a reason to appreciate Summer and Winter. Contrast. (Ugh. I still hate the heat. So much.)
Judy Laquidara says
That’s my thoughts. Fall means it’s a long time til summer again.

Since real summer doesn’t come for a while yet here, to me solstic!e is all about sunset time. Growing up so far north of here, it’s difficult to deal with the early sunset (even on the longest day of the year). I dislike that it is dark here when there is still nearly an hour of sunlight where my family lives (plus another hour of twilight)

I’m not a fan of summer at all except for the length of daylight hours. Fall is better but that’s major fire season and hot dry winds. Winters are ok, but spring is my favorite, temps are cool/comfortable, birds are producing babies (we have hummingbird nests that are visible) and the bright freshness of new green leaves and flowers is just exciting.
