Just so no one thinks that the comment issues, the freeze dryer arriving, the setting up of the freeze dryer, the trip to United, Aldi and CVS Pharmacy with Vince, and . . something else I cannot remember . . nope, those did not keep me from sewing!
I need 48 of these and I think I have 25 done. Over halfway finished with these. I love how the Tri-Recs ruler set makes these come out so close to perfect. A reader commented that these pieces would always be “Peaky and Spike” to her. I had totally forgotten about old Peaky and Spike! Doreen Speckmann. She was a hoot. I met her at Paducah a year or so before she passed away.
For those who never knew her, or for those who did and may have forgotten, please read this article, especially the paragraph that begins: “Some Words About My Friend, Doreen Speckmann”. Just thinking about her brings a smile to my face. She was a funny lady who truly enjoyed life and just spending a minute with her brightened your day. May we all be more like her! I hope she knows what a great influence she had on so many quilters.
Thanks, Sandy, for bringing up a memory that was deeply buried in my mind . . a memory I am happy to have brought to the surface.

I have yet to make a “Peaky and Spike” without a smile on my face. i was a fairly new quilter and she made it doable. She was just plain ol’ contagious….. Good progress on the parts.

I remember seeing her on one of the quilt shows “way back when” and she sure did make one smile. I wanted to see her in person, but, that didn’t happen.

Thanks for the link to Judy Martin’s tribute to Doreen! The classes I had with her were so much fun. Not only was she a talented quilter, but she was also a great entertainer! She lived life to the fullest and her legacy lives on with Peaky and Spike! She wrote a book called Pattern Play, but I don’t know if it’s still available.

I loved Doreen! I still have some of her fabric – it was so pretty!

Yep, those pieces will always be Peaky & Spike to me too. Always enjoyed videos by her or seeing her as a guest on quilting shows. (Did she even do videos? I may be dis-remembering.) Her humor & just the way she phrased things always brought a smile if not an outright giggle. So sorry that her time on earth was cut short.

I am happy that I got to see Doreen in person, even before I knew of her. She was delightful!
I’m also happy the comments are back.

I, too, always call them Peaky and Spike because of Doreen. I didn’t know her personally, but she did influence quilting a lot!

In 1998 I discovered HGTV (I’d just become an “old” stay-at-home mom) which aired Alex Anderson’s show Simply Quilts. I recall that Doreen was one of the guests…the names Peaky and Spike just stuck with me. So-o-o-o many wonderful guests on that show. It took a year or so of watching before I started quilting, but that was my start. I’m so happy to see you quilting and blogging about quilting again…maybe it’ll help to renew my own enthusiasm as I’ve only done a couple of hours of piece-work in the last year.
