Y’all don’t know how sorry I am that the comments aren’t working right. You think you enjoy the blog . . I LOVE reading the comments. Every time I pass by the computer, I check to see if there are any new comments. My day has been empty without your comments.
I want to give a thumbs up to Becca at Jumping Jax Designs. She is johnny on the spot when I need help. As soon as I realized there was a problem, I did a few things and then sent her an email. I had a response back at 3 a.m. and she’s been back and forth with me all day trying to get it resolved. She’s narrowed it down to a plug in but . . which one???
Thank you so much for your patience!
So . . the freeze dryer arrived today.
Look at Vince! Doesn’t he look excited? Seriously, I think he is excited about this. It came on an 18 wheeler and there was no way it was getting down our driveway so we met him at the highway and picked it up. The driver was an older guy . . well, heck . . probably younger than us. He said “Y’all have such a nice place.” I’m thinking “Dude, you can’t even see the house. We might be living in a tattered tent back there.” But I didn’t say anything. He told Vince that he loved his house in Abilene but he would give anything to live out in the country with no neighbors.
On the way back to the house . .
Vince: Do you know how many people would give anything to be living where we live?
Me: As any grandma who lives 10 hours from her grandkids!
Vince: Would you really give all this up and move to Missouri if I said let’s do it?
Me: NO! My guess is we’ll never leave this place. They’ll bury us out back.
Vince: Or just throw us out and let the coyotes have a party.
Maybe I will move to Missouri! 🙂
Anyway . . the freeze dryer is here. That thing weighs about 150 pounds. We (and it was about 90% Vince and 10% me) lifted it out of the back of the RTV onto a hand truck, Vince wheeled it into the sewing room closet. Set it down on the floor. Then we had to figure out how to lift if off the floor. We couldn’t get our hands under it so we leaned it one way and stuck a couple of bolts of fabric under it, leaned it the other way and stuck a few more bolts under it. That gave us enough clearance to get our hands under it. Then, squatting and lifting it because we didn’t have much room to maneuver in there . . we lifted it onto the shelf and my bad knee was screaming!
It’s set up and ready to go. I did a test run to make sure the vacuum was working. It is and it’s pre-freezing now. I’ll put a load in it tonight.
Did I mention that I’m so excited? I can remember asking for one of these at least 4 years ago, and several times since then. I’m so thankful that Vince goes along with so many of my crazy ideas. Maybe Vince is thinking that the more stuff we get, the less chance we’ll ever get to move because it’s too much stuff to move. He may be right. We may have reached that point quite a while ago.

Oh, Judy, this is SO exciting! I never realized just how big they are, and weighing that much, wow, I’m impressed you and Vince could manhandle it like that! I know you’re excited. This morning you said you’d put the first batch in tomorrow morning, and now it’s tonight. LOL

Excited to hear what you freeze dry and how you like it when “thawed/hydrated”. Hope comments are working.

Can’t wait to see all of the goodies you freeze dry! Your favorite ice cream maybe?
Cilla Tyler says
Never thought of ice cream….hmmmmmm….

I’ve seen it in the backpacking food section of the outdoor store but have never tried it! Might be good though or fun to experiment with 🙂

Yet another use for those bolts of fabric! LOL. I may not comment very often, but I read every post and I’m very interested in hearing about your freeze drying adventures.
Cilla Tyler says
At first I thought you meant freeze drying the bolts of fabric. Re read it….never mind….LOL.

It’s much larger than I thought it would be.
Dianne says
Love the use of the bolts.

Thanks for taking us along on all of your adventures. I was talking to Gary about your Harvest Right and he said, “Judy’s getting one, isn’t she?” LOL

That is a very nice set up you have there! Looking forward to your first batch!

I think Vince is more worried about his stomach than anything. Just think, if something happens you two will have food for at least 25 years!! That is more than I can say for a lot of people including myself. I have lived through some hard times though and I will make it until I can’t make it.
