Yesterday we got together with friends and had a retirement party of sorts. Another friend had retired a bit before Vince did and we kept staying “we all need to get together” and never did so yesterday was the day. Believe it or not, I didn’t even take my phone with me because I didn’t want to have to keep up with it. I saw the cake and thought . . too bad I don’t have my phone so I can get a picture. Since it was chocolate, I didn’t even get a slice but asked my friend to take a picture of her piece of cake and send it to me.
It was chocolate cake with chocolate icing with some kind of strawberry filling, which Vince said was delicious.
Hard to believe I almost missed getting a picture of Vince’s retirement cake!
I guess that makes it official – the cake has been served so he must really be retired now.
We were talking about how things change once our husbands retire. One of the things I had been most worried about was my health insurance. I had put off going to the doctor because I thought it was really bad insurance but it paid better than the insurance we had with Vince’s employer. Glad to know that and I won’t be afraid to go to the doctor next time.
Coming home last night, Vince said “Today is Saturday, right?” I said “Yes, I think” but without my phone, I wasn’t even sure. Then Vince said “I guess it doesn’t matter any more what day of the week it is.” Nope . . every day is the same for us and that feels good!
There are still days when I look at him in the morning and think . . you and me . . together . . all day! I’m getting more used to it. The hard thing for me is still not having any time alone. I don’t think I wrote this Friday but when I went to the doctor, Vince was with me and he was going to go back to see the doctor with me. I said “NO! I’m doing this by myself!” Vince was offended that I would not let him go back there with me. Our doctor is our friend and I knew that he and Vince would be talking about everything except what I wanted to ask the doctor about.
The wives decided last night that the old saying is true — can’t live with them and can’t live without them! 🙂

That’s true of SO much (living with and without) but life is definitely worth with them (most anyway) than without. You guys will settle into a new norm soon!

I am very happy to have my TV and his in another room. And he sits in his room with TV book and internet most of the time.
He got used to that as he retired first and I worked all night and slept in the day time. So he had to stay in the other end of the house from where I was asleep.

For some years and many managers my husband arranged retirement dinners for the group and wives. As more and more retired I would ask him, ‘who will plan your dinner? ‘. When he retired at the age of 56, several said ‘we need to take you to dinner’ and for years after. Hasn’t happened yet! So glad it worked out for Vince and that the cake was good. Sounds like the one husband ordered! In case I haven’t said it, Congratulations! Welcome! to this new world!

It’s far better with them. =) Happy retirement, officially now! So … are you retiring, too? =)

You will appreciate this one. When my dad retired he thought he needed to rearrange the contents of my mom’s kitchen. Her reply to that suggestion was that she would be doing the same to his numerous tools at the same time. Need I say that the kitchen arrangement stayed as she wanted it. Happy retirement and many years of good health to the both of you.

Happy Retirement – to you both! When hubby and I retired, we took off our watches and bought a “day-of-the-week clock” from Plow and Hearth. Cannot tell you how much we look at it and they make wonderful retirement gifts. Sorting out your individual time takes patience and creativity. JudyCinNC
