You know that once I make up my mind to get something, it doesn’t take long before I order it. It has been several years that I’ve thought about getting one of these. Vince and I talked about it, watched videos, and the bottom line was that I wanted this to be something that pays for itself in time and money and not just another toy. I ordered the Harvest Right Medium/Standard in stainless steel.
My plan is to try really hard to keep a good list of what I’ve freeze dried, how it reconstitutes and the amount of money I save by using it. Since we don’t often buy freeze dried foods, it will be hard to determine how much we’re saving but I’ll figure out some way to at least get an idea.
It could be up to 10 business days before it ships and probably at least a week for it to get here so it may well be towards the end of the month before I get it. I’m so excited.
United had frozen corn for $1 a bag when we were there over the weekend. Vince went back this morning to get more and it was one. Darn! I love frozen corn.
I hope you’re ready to take this adventure with me.

I can’t wait until you start using it. I’ve just recently started using freeze dried foods.

Yep, I’m ready! You could compare a lot of things to the cost of the #10 cans of freeze dried things on the Thrive site. Thrive I don’t know if it’s the cheapest – probably not – but I do know it’s the BEST. They have canneries within a short distance (4 hours or so, as I understand it) of every place they buy or grow foods. You will really save on meats. 20 servings of ground beef, freeze dried is $60.69, and 2 1/2 C. FD Ground Beef + 2 C. Water = 1 lb. Fresh Ground Beef Now that’s 5 servings, so it’s 4 lb. equivalent and for almost $61. With the price you paid today, you would save a lot! The #10 can of diced mango is $37.79 and that’s 11.5 cups. I don’t know what you get from a mango, but you can check, having a few around. =) I use the celery bits a lot. For $27.39, you get 10 cups of freeze dried. I usually buy the pantry can which is $11.19 for 3 cups, because it does last a while. That gives you a little idea, maybe.

I’ll be following your progress on this project. I use a lot of freeze-dried foods (Thrive Life) since I can use a little of something when making dinner. One adjustment I made with the food storage was moving the food from the cans into half-gallon and quart mason jars and then using the fresh-saver suction top to remove excess air.
Where are you planning to put the machine – in the quilt room? IF I remember correctly, you store your canned foods in one of the closets in there, so is that where you would also store the FD foods? It will be interesting to see your food prep set-up.

I’m ready as well, I look forward to hearing your impressions but my husband said read but don’t think about getting one….who knows the Instapot worked out well.

I’ve told my husband several times that if we ever remodel the kitchen, we need to make room for a freeze dryer! Can’t wait to see how you like it!
