Addie and I had our talk about taking George to school. She said “No . . she wasn’t planning to take him” but a few minutes later, she said she “might” bring him. We talked about how George might get bored at school and how Speck might be lonely without George at home. I suggested she leave George sitting at the dining room table where he can see her when she walks in the door but she sometimes watches out the front window for her dad to get home and she thought it was a better idea to park George where he could watch out the window for her to get home.
I had three little Georges that clip onto a backpack or purse – one for Addie, one for her mom and one for me. I explained that mommy and Granny would always be looking at our little George and thinking about Addie and big George at home waiting for her. She seemed pleased with that idea.
This is what bedtime now looks like. Lots of them! She sometimes calls him George, and sometimes calls him “the monkey”.
Yesterday we went to town for lunch and she never mentioned bringing him Other days, he’s with her every step she takes.
I told her I would be back for her first day of school so I’ll get to see how the George situation goes.
Thinking about me being back in MO for her first day of school, I remembered that Chad’s first day of his senior year in high school, I cried. We had experienced many first days of school but no more . . now here I get to do it again with a granddaughter. Hopefully I won’t embarrass her by bawling on her first day of school!

OH YEAH! I used to take off from work the First day of school. I don’t care how old they were…. it was also nice being OFF that quiet first day!

I remember you bawled when Chad went off to college (another “first day”)!
Maybe you’ll be able to keep it in just long enough to not embarrass her. Then again, maybe she’ll know how special it is to have Granny there to see her off.

Just look away or look down because you know you will cry!
