Not only are we outrageously far apart in the location of our retirement but also in the retirement home.
This morning I sent him a link to this house. It needs some updating and the kitchen would have to be gutted because I do not want painted cabinets and I think I could arrange it a bit more to my liking. Of course, all I’ve seen are the photos. Little cabin looking place, a lake, ducks, a small shop for Vince . . nothing fancy but very easy for living our lifestyle.
This is the house Vince sent me. Five bedrooms. 6 bathrooms. No shop. White carpet. What is he thinking?
Where do you go from here? Meeting in the middle is going to take quite a bit of distance from both sides. Again, I’m standing my ground — no more than 3 toilets to clean, no white carpet (preferably NO carpet at all). Something more rustic fits our lifestyle better than some Georgian style brick BIG house.
Oh dear . . I do believe this is going to be more adventure than I bargained for!
Cindy says
Mt. Vernon city and rural water is very expensive. Minimum amount you will be billed for is 1500 gallons which comes to about $119. I think Vince sent you the wrong link. lol
Judy Laquidara says
Mount Vernon, TX or Mount Vernon, MO? No matter . . we will not buy a place without a well. Most of the houses I’ve found in Mount Vernon, MO had great wells. Pretty much this entire area of MO has outrageous water bills. When we lived in Nevada, MO, with Chad home part-time, we never had a water/sewer (combined) bill that was less than $200. They just got their water bill and it’s $110.

You are obviously looking for something easy to keep up as you age and Vince is looking for his dream home. Unless he intends to do all the cleaning, etc. I’d nix that in a hurry. No place is perfect, but WHITE carpet, all those bedrooms & bathrooms, why? I’m glad it’s never been a question for us, the hubby will never leave here, we’ll be here till they carry us out. It won’t matter where the kids are. I half way expect our daughter & SIL to move to Florida when their kids are all out of school and our son keeps talking about moving out west to the mountains. If any of that happens we’ll just be on our own, I guess. For better or worse.
Judy Havens says
If you settle on a two story, be SURE you get a ground floor master bedroom and bathroom in case there comes a time when one or both of you can’t climb the stairs. This happened to family members who then had to set up a bedroom in a small room downstairs, with no access to a shower, etc. It was very difficult for them. I’ve already got knee and foot problems and would never get a two-story home, unless the top floor was going to be occupied by my daughter’s family!
Judy Laquidara says
In some areas, it’s harder to find the square feet we need with a once story but a once story is my preference. Yes, the master bedroom must be on the ground level.
Marie Gilkey says
Master bedroom, kitchen, family room and laundry are best on one level. Ask me how I know. Stairs are a pain the older one gets. Hate it that kids have to do so much for me now.
Deborah Stokes says
“Gated” equals a ton of rules and restrictions. Surely he was joking?? Is that a possibility??
Judy Laquidara says
Doubtful. “Gated” on an FM highway, especially in Texas, usually means “We have a big gate. Don’t even think of trying to get through!” Even at our place, every house on our highway has a gate.
If you look at the photos, especially #18, I think you’ll see there are no rules or restrictions. Even Vince would not consider a location that has rules and restrictions.
Deb says
Soooooo glad to hear that!! I never understand what exactly they want you to do with 5 acres if no animals allowed (farm type). Just beautiful flower gardens I guess.
Wendy says
Wow – $333,000 for the little house you are looking at. We can’t even buy a condo for that here. Average house that is fairly decent is $700,000 +. We are starting to talk about downsizing as well and I’m looking at places that are basically $850,00 and upward – mainly in the $1,000,000.00 range.
Good luck in your search.
PS. I love the little house – my type of place.

YIKES, Does Vince’s choice come with a maid??? White carpets?????He cannot be serious. Is he a joker? I’d put my down on that one.
Joyce says
I like your house choice better than Vince’s, although with that many bedrooms, maybe he’s planning to use one of them as his “shop”. LOL
Becky says
Many men want to give their wives stately homes not thinking about the cleaning, dusting, scrubbing toilets, and stairs involved. Maybe he thinks he owes you a mansion! Your house does look more your style, but what about the blood, sweat, and tears you’ve put in your current place? We’re retired and all our wish list included was no stairs, 3 car garage, and at least 3 acres.
Cilla Tyler says
I look at your orchard and know how long it will take for new fruit trees to bear and some you will not be able to grow in the north. Besides being so far from Chad and family you have a mansion where you are. Such a tough decision for you both.
Diane in CA says
I don’t know, I would go for the 5 br house. You get your bathroom, Vince gets his. You have one room for kitchen storage, one for sewing and a whole room for yarn. You don’t have to use all 6 bathrooms but when you’re at the end of the hall and you gotta pee that #6 bathroom will come in handy.. And like I yell at all the house hunters on tv.. you can change the carpet!!
dezertsuz says
I like both houses, but they would be for completely different lifestyles. And who does Vince think is going to clean almost 5000 square feet of house? There is something much more homey about the house you picked. Yes, there is a lot of middle in there! LOL
Karen Sutton says
Oh my, you really are worlds apart.
