My uncle loves chocolate pie but, he really loved my grandma’s chocolate pie. I kinda remember it but he remembers everything about it – the texture, the crust, the “not so chocolate-y taste”. I made a chocolate pie when I was here at Christmas but, from what he remembers, it was more chocolate-y than my grandma’s. I’ve been searching recipes and I tried another recipe so it was a surprise. He didn’t know I was making it. I made it on Tuesday and by Wednesday night, it was all gone. I think everyone loved it!
At Christmas, I didn’t even have a mixer at the lake when I made the meringue. I used a fork to whip the egg whites and I said . . never again so I bought a mixer for the lakehouse and brought it with me this time.
My favorite part of a chocolate pie . . the crust!
I told my uncle that I want his honest opinion . . how is it compared to my grandma’s. He was trying to be nice and he said “It isn’t what I remember her pie being but it’s good!” Then on Wednesday, as we were finishing it off, he had a few bites and he said “You know . . I think this is as good as mom’s chocolate pie!”
I remember Nanny’s pie being amazing . . she was an amazing cook, but I just don’t remember enough about it to know when I’m getting close. My uncle appreciates a homemade pie and since this one is as good as my grandma’s, according to my uncle, I think I’ll stick with this recipe.
This is the recipe I used – crust, pie filling and meringue. It has been suggested that we may need one more pie made .. since there’s only one slice left of this one.
