Going through my stash on Ravelry, these are the yarns I have in Madelinetosh Sport in sufficient quantities to make Winterfell Cardigan. According to the pattern, I need about 1,300 yards. Because of swatching and I think I’ll make mine a little longer, I’d feel much more comfortable with at least 1,400 yards. That’s 5.18 skeins so 6 skeins will give me 1,620 yards and I’ll be real comfortable with that amount.
First is a pretty green – the color is Thoreau and I have 2,160 yards. Plenty!
The second is Firewood. Love the color but am not sure about whether I’d lose the pattern. I can always swatch with the pattern to see what it looks like. I have 2,430 yards of this.
Last of the Tosh Sport in my stash . . Dachshund. I’m saving this for a very special project because I remember buying this and thinking . . Old Speck isn’t going to be around forever and I want to get this yarn! I have 1,620 yards of it. The perfect amount without having to leave orphan skeins behind. The design is probably less likely to show up with this color than with Firewood.
What do I do? I have a credit at ESK so I could order yarn but I really want to use the stash.

I could see what you mean about you loosing the pattern with firewood- maybe if you swatch with firewood you will know. Both are gorgeous Judy.

I like the second one too. Don’t know about the design part.Sorry I’m not much help.

I like all three choices. The green would show the surface design best, but the other two choices would result in a much more exciting sweater. I might want to to swatch and see what comes of the design surface just so I could knit with yarn that I can’t wait to see the finished results. Love the mixed strand colors of Madelinetosh.

My vote is also Firewood. I was looking at some of the completed sweaters on Ravelry and it looks like a variety of variegated yarns were used without losing the pattern. Of course I had to add that pattern to my queue – you delete, I add:)

I’m kind of in love with Dachshund. Let Old Speck wrap you in a hug whenever you need one…if you can knit this without crying. Might be too soon. I think all three yarns are beautiful, so it will be beautiful any way you go.

I like what Joyce said about Speck wrapping you in a hug. I glanced at the pattern, and the design is simple enough and bold enough it might show up even in variegated yarn. Good luck with your decision.

Knowing MT yarns, I think the variegated might work okay, IF you alternate skeins by rows. The firewood is pretty, but I wonder if the dachshund might pool in an weird way, spots of the light colors? I think the pattern would be more textural with the variegated, the solid makes it pop, adding to the structure of the cardigan. JMHO 🙂
