The best thing about growing pomegranates is that they don’t have to be thinned. I don’t have to stand out there and pluck off perfectly good fruit.
But, what works against the pomegranates — those beautiful red blooms. The chickens love them!
I stood there for 10 minutes trying to get a picture and couldn’t but the chickens will jump, they’ll try flying up . . and they get every single bloom they can reach. They love the leaves too. One thing for sure . . there will be no low hanging fruit on the trees that are in the orchard. There’s one tree outside the orchard so the chickens can’t get to that one. Well, I probably shouldn’t say that. Once they see pomegranates on the other say of the fence, they may figure out a way to get to those too.

Can’t you place a chicken wire fence around each tree to protect it? It would be better than wasting all that water for no produce.

We “can” do anything but putting a fence around 50 fruit trees isn’t really worth it. The chickens will catch some of the bugs and they scratch under the trees and keep the dirt somewhat aerated so they do serve a purpose.

Those bad chickens!!

I love pomegranates, but they are definitely work to eat. I hope you get plenty!
