I went out to the garden and nothing looks too bad. I’m sure the 30-31 degree temps all day didn’t improve anything but other than very minor damage, they look ok.
Some of the very top leaves look a little damaged but last year, a big hail storm came through in May. My tomatoes then were about as big as these are now and the hail broke every plant off about 12 – 18″ from the ground and they all came back and did fine.
Peppers are usually more fragile than tomatoes but they all look good too.
Basil seems to shrivel and die when the temps get below 35° and most of it looks fine. In one pot, one sprig looks good and one sprig doesn’t. The good news is . . I just planted these so I can buy more if they don’t make it.
It was the tomatoes I was mostly concerned about because I’ve babied those plants through the winter.
The elderberries look fine.
The litchi tomato doesn’t look good. I could have put it back in the greenhouse but the weather man was saying our low was going to be 35 – 37. I figured even if it dropped that low, it would only be for a very short time but it went to 30 and stayed there til about 4 p.m. and then started warming up.
The big fig tree doesn’t look good. Most of the leaves appear to be damaged but it will put on new leaves . . may slow it down a bit but I think it will be fine.
The peaches look fine but I think if they’re damaged, they will start to rot from the pit area so it will take a while before we know if they were damaged. Everything I read said that once the fruit is formed, it has to get down to 28 or 29 before the fruit is damaged. We were close but I never saw any temps below 30 so I’m going to remain hopeful. Not much else I can do, right?
Even the little mini banana trees don’t look damaged. It could have been a whole lot worse. Now I’ll believe the old timers when they say “If it thunders in February, it will freeze in April!”

Yep, my Sunday School teacher said his best friend had told him last week he’d planted his tomatoes and Tony said ‘didn’t I tell you to wait’. He said yes, the 80 degree weather makes everyone wanna go out and plant and get all excited and everything. They live in Reno, TX so may have gotten colder there..I dunno. But there’s still hope!!

I’ve never heard that “if it thunders in February it will freeze in April” but we have snow here in Cincinnati, I have never seen it snow this much. One or maybe 2 days in April but this is a 3rd time! Come on Spring! I want to get out to my garden!!!
