The second sock pattern in Curious Handmade’s Sock Society came out a few days ago. I haven’t had a lot of time to think about it but last night, I was chomping at the bit to cast on. I was by myself last night and didn’t want to go to the sewing room late at night and dig through boxes of yarn so I went through what I had in the house and here are some possibilities and my pros and cons for each. These photos were all taken late last night so they’re not the best as far as color goes.
This is the Squoosh Fiberarts Beefcake Sock which was the April Exclusive Colorway. Left is one Wakame. Center are two Rhodophyta. Right is one Kelp Forest.
Pros: I love the Rhodophyta for this pattern. It’s 75% Superwash Merino/25% Nylon, which is great for socks.
Cons: This is 460 yards per 100 rams so it’s just a bit thinner than I enjoy knitting for socks. It will hold up just fine but will take longer to knit. It’s actually classified as “Light Fingering”.
Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock has long been a favorite of mine for socks. The color of this one is Mirth.
Pros: A long favorite for socks. It’s 80% Superwash Wool/20% Nylon so it will hold up. The color is nice and solid-ish.
Cons: It’s 430 yards/100 grams. Better than 460 for making socks but I’d like something that’s 400 yards/100 grams.
The color is Apricot and this is another favorite for socks.
Pros: This one is 425 yards/115 grams – much more to my liking for knitting socks. It’s 80% Superwash Merino/20 nylon so that’s good for socks. This one is almost spot on with the weight/yardage as recommended in the pattern.
Cons: The color may be too light for socks.
The color is Pinky Swear. I love this color. Not exactly solid but not enough variation to cause the design not to show.
Pros: Color! Love the color
Cons: 90% Superwash Merino/10% Nylon – a little scary for me. The nylon adds strength and durability. 437 yards/100 grams – probably a little fragile due to the content and would better suit a shawl or something that doesn’t get so much wear.
Finally, this is Manos del Uruguay Alegria. The color is Cactus Flower.
Pros: Content is good (75% wool/25% polyamide); color is great.
Cons: 445 yards/100 grams but, it looks like it’s a little thicker than some of the others.
If you had to decide between these yarns, which one would you choose?

I don’t want to lead you down another rabbit hole but have you ever tried Frog Tree Pediboo Sport for socks? A little heavier but a great sock yarn.

I like the Manos, but for color, the Kelp Forest in the first photo.

Not sure which way I’d lean, but I’m working on all brighter color socks with this mystery. You sure had me checking my yardage requirements, tho! I knit all day yesterday on a plane and felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere. Turns out my yarn is 463 yard in 100 grams! No wonder. Ugh. Looks like I’ll be buying yarn locally and starting over… and paying more attention at my local shop. Good luck choosing! 🙂

I’m thinking Cactus Flower. I agree with you on the yardage….

That’s mot a fair question!! I like them all!
