It’s fun working on Penguono because the construction is so “not normal” and choosing the colors is fun. Anything goes. All I’m trying to do is make sure I don’t have very darks next to very darks so that the color changes are lost, and have a variety of lights and darks. I may make another one and make it more planned but my goal this time is to use up scraps.
I had never knitted “welts” before and they were quite fun. I deviated from the pattern just a bit. After that blue-ish section on the left, the instructions said to put the live stitches on waste yarn but I couldn’t see any reason why I couldn’t go on and do the next section, which means I have 10 stitches on waste yarn, which would have been on waste yarn no matter how I did it . . instead of 37 or 38 stitches on waste yarn.
Next, I’ll do the three welts on the right side and begin knitting the sides and on to the front for the right side.

I love Steve Wests knitting patterns, they are so different and fun to knit. I have knitted 4 shawls from his patterns,
