Here’s my March UFO. It’s the DaVinci Cowl.
While I cannot say I love this project, I almost love it. First, the edges curl. I knew they would. I had read notes from others who made it and thought by making a 6 row garter along the edges, it might not roll, but it does, despite blocking and turning the edges completely the wrong way, they flip back out. I totally love how you calculate the repeat to get the amazing pooling.
I did not want it to be this long but, one of the many times I ripped back and cast on, I tried making it shorter and using bigger needles but the fabric was too loose for my liking.
This project was started for the Gift Along back in November but I restarted it several times. I totally gave up after Christmas and had decided not to make it, ripped it all back, then for the Ravellenics Games on Ravelry (that coincide with the Winter Olympics), I cast on again, though didn’t finish it in time for the game challenge. I took it to my uncle’s in February and cast on for the fourth time there. I knew it was going to be too long but at that point I figured it was either finish or give up. I got a bit done – it’s so easy – just stockinette. Then when it was drawn as the March UFO, I dug it out just in time to have it handy to take to the hospital and knitted on it quite a bit while Vince was there.
Normally I won’t start, rip, start, rip, start again that many times but I love pooling so it drew me back in every time. Glad to have it finished and it’s something I can wear with my brown coat next winter.

It turned out very pretty in that yarn. I have to knit my garter borders with at least one needle size smaller than the stockinette to stop it from rolling.

Really like the color of that yarn. You’re doing famously on your UFOs – that’s three done?

I think it is pretty and when wrapped just the right lenght. Maybe wrap and pull it down in front them wouldn’t be to long for you just and idea.

Absolutely love it.

As the designer of the DaVinci Cowl, let me first say how beautifully this has knit up for you and such a gorgeous yarn choice. Planned pooling can be a big learning curve, not that the technique itself is hard but the controlling of the knitting tension to create the desired effect, well, there is the curve. But with patience, as you have found and trial and error, the effect is stunning. The bonus? Once you master it the next one(s) you knit become much easier. less time ripping and more time knitting. And then it’s easier to customize the desired length and finished measurements of your project as well.
Thank you so much for not only knitting a beautiful DaVinci, but for sharing how you felt about the design!

Thank you for writing. It was such a fun pattern to knit. I had no problem with the pattern. I loved it and can’t wait to start another one.
