Vince has a birthday coming up. We’re trying to be really strict on this new heart healthy way of eating. Having a birthday cake is important to Vince. He never cares if it’s homemade or storebought but even if I made a small cake .. a cake is so off limits right now. There’s a place in town where I can buy cake balls and I figured one little cake ball can’t be too bad so I was thinking about getting him one of those.
This morning we were talking about it and he said “I could have a carrot cake. That’s kind of vegetable-y!” No! It’s also also “white flour-y, sugar-y, egg-y and nothing about it is really healthy”. Maybe we’ll just forego the birthday cake in hopes of assuring he has lots more birthdays! 🙂
I think I may make a small angel food cake and serve it with strawberries or blueberries. That’s better than a cake with whole eggs, oil or butter. It’s a compromise . . that should work! He’ll feel special because he’s getting a birthday cake and I’ll feel better about not totally blowing the healthy eating plan!

Thankful he will have many more birthdays to celebrate! You will make sure of that (wink wink) so hard eating right when we were growing up and foods were made with vegetable oil, fats, butter, etc., not knowing it’s bad for us! Also genetics plays a part. Happy Birthday to Vince! I am so happy he is on the mend!!
Rita must be glad he is home too!! Hugs Judy!!!

My mother and grandparents were heart patients…Angel food cake with fruit topping was what they had…with some whipped cream (small amount). To them it was better than nothing. Best Wishes to you both in this new journey.

Judee, I think your idea is the best solution. Another option is to just buy a slice from a bakery or grocery store. We splurge that way once in a great while and share the slice. You only get 3-4 bites that way (at least that’s all I ever get!) but just enough to make you feel like you had a treat.

I LOVE angel food cake with strawberries..probably like that better than most cakes!
Helen says
Moderation! Sharing a slice of cake from the bakery or restaurant is a good compromise. A few bites and it’s gone. No leftovers to tempt.

We went through this scene last fall. If you’re diet is anything like ours, it’s pretty severe, but seems to be working well. We were able to get a phone call from Dr. Esselstyn from Cleveland Clinic who is doing heart disease reversals with just diet.

Angel Food Cake with Fruit is perfect. That’s what we used to have after Bill’s heart attack! And I love angel food cake!

My mother always made Angel Food Cake because it was something she could have even with diabetes, so here’s another vote for Angel Food!
Jackie says
Your doing the right thing making an Angel food cake. It’s a fine balance you will have to follow in the future. I had to have a stress test on Monday for a base line and the cardiologist said it’s important to follow the recommendations but not deprive yourself because he found people don’t stick with it in the long run if they do.

How about 2 cakes in a mug? You’re so creative in the kitchen. I bet you can figure out the ingredients for his favorite flavor. A heart healthy diet can include the occasional indulgence.

Angel food cake was always birthday cake at our house – the only thing better in my opinion than plain angel food cake is putting some raspberries on top of it.

Before I got to the place where you said angel food cake, I was going to suggest you do that. It would not be as bad as regular cake and with the fruit it would be healthier. Go for it!

I was going to suggest angel food cake with fresh strawberries and rediwhip! The readiwhip can is very low in sugar. Y’all’s tastebuds will quickly adapt to the less salt too!! Yay for healthy eating and feeling better!!!
Susan says
That’s a good plan! And delicious, too.

Angel Food Cake is my Dad’s favorite! Hope the new diet is easier to adjust to than it sounds. I love salt and salty foods but know it’s better to use less. Fortunately I have normal blood pressure. Hubby really has to watch his.

We love Angelfood cake around here and with him being diabetic -fresh strawberries and a little whipped cream. Not much mind you .. Its good for you and you feel as if you are eating something decadent ! Which you are !

OOps forgot with a weee bit of dark chocolate

Angel food cake! I had forgotten all about it. Thanks for the tip, maybe we will have one of those. We are now watching sugar and carbs (pre-diabetic). I cut our salt back a long time ago due to cholesterol problems. We got accustomed to that pretty fast. The only drawback is trying to eat out. Everything in the restaurants tastes so salty now, and the fast food places—forget about it. I am sure that you will do exceptionally well with the new diet, after all remember your diet a few years ago? You guys did great on it, hang in there. 🙂

I am a firm believer in NOT depriving myself/family/friends on special occasions–

Here’s a delicious, healthy cake from Castaway Kitchen. Maybe this would work? Her recipes are delicious and healthy, using all natural ingredients. Her brownies made with avocados are out of this world! So happy to hear that Vince is bouncing back quickly. Miss his daddy’s sage advice! https://thecastawaykitchen.com/2015/06/double-dark-chocolate-cake-with-pistachio-mint-swiss-merengue-buttercream/

You could make a carrot cake and bake it in small baby loaf pans. Then freeze the others and when you want one thaw it out. They freeze good and then Vince could have a little cake. I’ve found you will do better cooking from scratch rather than buying anything from a store. Commercial baked goods are still full of bad stuff.
