Many lifestyle changes will be taking place around here over the next few weeks. My beloved Slap Ya Mama seasoning has been moved towards the back of the spice cabinet and there’s a new spice front and center.
Last night I seasoned our chicken using the Onion & Herb variety. I don’t think we use a whole lot of salt around here. We rarely salt our food at the table and I don’t cook with a lot but Vince eats a lot of processed type foods – wieners, lunch meat and I sometimes joke and tell him I’m offended that he’d rather eat a frozen dinner than something I’ve made from scratch. So much of that stuff has lots of sodium.
But, the new lifestyle means less salt. The recommendation the hospital gave us is less than 2,400 mgs per day, though some things I saw online say less than 1,500 mgs per day. Probably less is better. My goal will be 1,500 with the upper limit being 2,000.
The chicken with Mrs. Dash’s seasoning wasn’t bad and I know we’ll get used to the less salt.

I am starting to make my own blends since I have been reading labels over the last month and I am amazed how many have sugars, salts, MSG, etc. I have been deceasing the salt used in cooking and eating, but I also switched to using sea salt and kosher salt. Guess what, I am having a thyroid problem, so I have to start reusing the iodized salt.
Have fun with the diet planning, though I think you do serve good clean foods. Sounds like Vince is the one sneaking in the bad food stuffs. I do know a couple guys who went to cooking classes and became very interested in cooking after they had heart attacks.

Oh i feel the pain here at this house too. I had to hide the salt comp!early from dh. But I also found out sugar isn’t good either makes you drink more water which heart patients can’t have. Now no of not much sa!t and too off not inch sugar. Well there is a revolt here against me. Like you I didn’t use much salt but the guy loves his weinners and lunchmeat. So it is a challenge . Good luck nd I’m so glad they could fix Vince before he had a heart attack.

You can still add pepper flakes to that if you want it with more spice. Or more garlic.

Mrs Dash Extra Spicy is great too. It will give you the kick you like.

Yes – the cardiologist told husband he had to cut down on salt. So very difficult for a salt addict! When I was the one doing the cooking I rarely added salt because I knew he was the one who would salt everything before even tasting it! I usually only salt potatoes and tomatoes for myself…..but reading labels – it is interesting and informative. And I have to keep telling husband – not only is it for taste, it is also a preservative so literally EVERYthing has salt in it.

Make sure you read the labels and check with the MD…..many of the salt substitutes are high in potassium…..which probably is ok but doesnt hurt to ask

I have been told 1500 by all my Dr’s. I buy unsalted or no salt added broth’s. The only thing I buy canned is broth and tomatoes . Costco also sells a seasoning the contains no salt and is very good. I use a lot of spices. Slap Ya Mama has also been moved to the back of the burner. You will have to figure out how much salt your personally canned food contains. Same thing with fats and oils. Bacon, salami, bologna, hot dogs etc are all a no no. I think bacon is the only thing I miss! It is certainly a new lifestyle. I have taken classes that are offered and dh has gone with me. I am also dealing with diabetes so it limits things even more. You can do it!

You will find there is a lot of salt in pork, beef, and even chicken. We now only eat bison and very little of it. Veggie become your best friend. Santa Cruz spices have a lot of different ones with no salt. They ship anywhere, and their spices are amazing. It is crazy when you start reading what is in things and see salt. The hardest part for us was the cheese, I love cheese. I know you and Vince will make the switch with no problem.

Penzeys is another great spice company that have several no salt blends. They can be a bit pricy but are very fresh. Only a very few brick and mortar stores but a great online presence.

With all your herbs you have planted, I think you could make your own and it will be more fresh than what you buy.

Here’s a suggestion : Penzey’s Spices has salt free spices and herb mixes which is what we use .. Maybe a look see if that helps any and again its just a suggestion. I buy alot of salt free spices and herb mixes, Hubs hardly misses his salt when he has those to cook/bbq with.

Benoit’s seasoning is the best. Samples were given to me when my husband was in hospital with heart problems. You can guess by the name it is a Louisiana product. It is just like Tony’s with no salt or potassium I’ll be glad to send you some if you are interested.

Anything processed is bad. I don’t buy it. We don’t really miss it except a hot dog once a year I’ll get done and fix at home with homemade chili and homemade coleslaw. Homemade is the key. I don’t buy any packaged foods. If I do it comes from Aldi. There food is better.
