Hello Everyone,
One of the things we have been focusing on lately is good health in retirement. We have been watching documentaries about health for a while, but as we get closer to the magic date, it becomes a bigger concern. All of you are aware of how costly health care has become and I doubt it’s going to get any better. It’s one of the largest unknowns when trying to figure out how much we need to save. If I can get my weight to a ‘normal” level, eat right, exercise and keep stress under control, we figure we have a better chance of minimizing our need for medical interventions. Just love that word!
Last night we watched “Fed Up” on Netflix. My doctor recommended it. If you haven’t seen it, you might want to give it a look. At our house we use the, “did Vince fall asleep during the show” gauge for thumbs up or thumbs down. I didn’t fall asleep (DFA), so it must have been a thumbs up. I don’t want to ruin it for you, so I won’t go into any details. However, if we do what they say, it should cut down on the Dr. Pepper and processed food budget, leaving more money for Vince stuff. The show did give us a little more inspiration to get the garden going, if it ever stops raining. Yes, you heard me right, RAINING. We get very, very little rain here , but for the past few days, we have been living in a mud hole. It seems we either have mud or dust. Two things we hope not to have at the final homestead.
Getting back to health, we found our fitness trackers, we have our super gulp water glasses and Judy is making me drink all kinds of berry juice. Most of it is pretty good but the beet juice is a bit much. I am sure anything that tastes that bad must be good for you. I think we are having a final celebration this weekend before we start getting really healthy because Judy made fresh bread and a cake. Things we aren’t supposed to be eating. Not wanting to hurt her feelings, I had a double serving of each.
Getting healthy starts Monday. I won’t provide details, but I can let you know from time to time the percent weight I have lost. That’s it for now. I must go eat a carrot. As my daddy always said – a pound lost is a pound lost!

Good Luck….it is a slow process. I have been working on eating healthier and moving more.

It is and we have a lot of changes we have to make.

Yay Vince! Slow and steady wins the race.

Thank you, Vince. I watched Fed Up. Interesting. I always knew the culprit was sugar and processed foods but along the way we become lax. The hubby and I are retired and have been for over 3 years and lately we have each had some medical challenges. Enough to slap us back to reality! We are still young (ish) and we have the time to make changes. It won’t be easy but challenges never are easy. Thank you, again, and I am enjoying your thoughts on retirement.

Drink lots of water, walk, eat almonds or walnuts daily. You will be surprised how much you can lose by doing this. Judy is a great cook and she can fix those healthy meals and you won’t have to eat “just carrots”. Cutting back just a little on portions is a good thing also. You can eat the same foods, just not as much. I have lost 40+ pounds since I retired in 2014. You don’t want to lose it all at once because you will only gain it back. They do have plates you can buy that have the portions on them. OOPS! Forgot you are on a budget! You can just guess at it or look it up on line.

We went to New Orleans to see Fed Up when it came out and it was down right scary. I know I feel better when I don’t have much sugar but I love sweets….especially chocolate.
