The car is partially loaded. We may need a U-Haul! We’re going home with coffee, king cakes, boudin (smoked, jalapeno and regular), tasso, andouille sausage, and beer! Lots of beer. We can’t buy Yuengling beer at home. Of course, we can’t buy tasso, boudin, andouille at home either or . . if we can get it, it surely doesn’t taste like want I can get here.
Considering that in the past three months, I’ve spent four weeks in Louisiana, I’m not feeling desperate because I have a feeling I’ll be back sooner rather than later.
We didn’t look at a single house here. Vince does not want to be in Lake Charles. Never say never, but I do think we’ve ruled out Louisiana. We’re really hopeful about finding something in east Texas if we can get in an area that doesn’t have fracking. It would be so nice if it was about 4 hours or less from our house .. would make it a heck of a lot easier to go look at places that come up but it’s a bit more than 6 hours from home.
The worst thing . . my friend had agreed to take care of the chickens while we were gone. They were gone the first day so a friend from town came out to care for them. Then, when my regular chicken sitter friend got home . . she was sick! It probably wasn’t the flu but it was close. She’s still stick so for a week . . 8 days really . . her husband, who is probably not a big fan of chickens, and chicken poop, has had to care for my chickens. To make matters worse, we’ve had ice and he’s had to break up ice in their water and he’s had to deal with the heater in the greenhouse and the heat light in the well house and taking care of Boots and Cat. Poor guy. He may never speak to me again! 🙂 He will get boudin, sausage, tasso and beer but I’m sure whatever I give him will not be fair payback for all he’s had to do.
We’ve had a great week, got a couple of things accomplished that we had needed to get done, was able to visit with old friends, spent good time with my uncle and now it’s almost time to go . . time to sleep in my own bed!
I love Louisiana. Vince does not. There’s a place we can retire where we can both be happy .. but it isn’t here.

With an occasional trip to Lousianna to stock up on “required foods” you actually appear to be very happy in your little piece of heaven in Texas…..if only for faster internet. It may come!

Have a safe trip home!

Just pullout your instant pot and make something tasty for your chicken-sitter couple ! They will love to have something they didn’t make, especially if your friend has been sick for a week. Safe Travels!

Wow, what a deal for the chicken sitter! I laughed. It wouldn’t surprise me if you DID rent a small U-Haul to drag stuff you like back home. =) It’s as important to know where you don’t want to be as it is to know where you do.

You were right up the road from us! We live in Port Neches, TX – not far from the LA border. We may not retire here, but we’ll be here a good while yet. We’ve started thinking long term, tho… and it’s nice to hear the things y’all are considering and pointing out. We’ve had some good discussions because of your posts. And yes, I’m sure having access to our favorite Cajun foods will be a consideration!! Enjoy your haul!

So glad you are on the way home! It was 26 when I got up this morning. There was ice and sleet on the car next door (we have a carport) but the streets were not iced over at 9 so we had no problems driving. We do need moisture though. It is getting bad here! Pray for rain here!

Maybe your chicken-sitter’s hubby will think ‘Gosh that Judy’s a hard worker, doing all this work every day!’. He’ll be glad to see you come home and will have a new respect for you…..

I’m not a beer drinker, but my boys are and whenever they travel to somehwere that has Yuengling they bring a trunkful home for themselves and their friends because you can’t get it here either. We also have to take Vernors, Koegel hot dogs and Spatz’s hot bread to friends and relatives out of state because you can’t get them in a lot of places and our transplanted family and friends look forward to that taste of home!!

ohmygosh! I’m SO envious of your boudin!!!! I wish I could find it up here!!! It was my FAVORITE food when I lived in Louisiana! 🙂
Judy Laquidara says
We can buy it here but it isn’t the same as that made in Louisiana so I’m always happy to get it when I can. I can imagine how much you miss it!
