You can take the girl out of Louisiana but you can’t take the Louisiana out of the girl!
King Cake and okra. The first things I bought when we stopped at the local grocery store.
The King Cake is pecan pralines and cream. I wasn’t expecting a lot. Some friends told me Market Basket (grocery store here) had good ones. Other friends said they didn’t like the King Cakes from Market Basket. Several told me to get my cake at a particular bakery. Arriving on Saturday and knowing the bakery wouldn’t be open til Monday, I grabbed a small King Cake at Market Basket and if the bakery cake is any better, I’ll be very surprised. It was delicious!
It feels so good to be back in Louisiana. It feels like home for me. It rained most of the day. I love rain and I don’t see it much in Texas. I love green grass and I don’t see much of that in Texas either.
For a few days I’ll enjoy the food, the friends, the family . . as much of Louisiana as I can absorb . . and then it’s back to Texas where I’ll practice “bloom where you’re planted”.

I’ve never had King Cake. Have you ever made one? Do they sell it only at Mardi Gras time? Enjoy your time in LA!

I’m not familiar with it either, what makes it a “king cake”?

Pecan praline and cream sound delicious in just about anything (cookies or cakes). Have a great visit.

A late friend of mine lived in New Orleans for a number of years. (She was originally was from Denmark and was a fantastic cook and baker). She absolutely loved Mardi Gras and went down every year to celebrate. She would always make a King Cake for our Bobbin Lace meeting that fell closest to Mardi Gras. It was such a great tradition. Seeing a King Cake is one of the many things that reminds me of her every year.

Praline anything is good with me! I never buy the pralines in stores – they don’t taste like the ones my aunt made. =) I’d give anything for her to be here and make some for me – or at least have left me her recipe! And okra … oh my gosh, love that stuff! Did I ever tell you my mother and aunts grew up in Louisiana? Just a little north of Leesville on the Sabine River. =)
