I always knew chickens would scratch, looking for bugs and worms but these chickens get to digging and I think they’re all saying “I see China!”
When I was a kid, there were about 10 kids all about the same age in our little four house neighborhood. We all thought we could dig all the way through and get to China. Our moms would give us old spoons because we were always digging for worms to use to catch fish in the pond next door and we’d start digging, with our kitchen spoons. I can remember thinking what I would say to the people in China when my dig was successful. I should have traded the kitchen spoon for chickens and I would have had more luck with my efforts.
The other day I mustered up enough courage to go check the amount of propane in the greenhouse tank and noticed the chickens had been digging and the front right block was close to being compromised. There’s a lot of weight on those blocks and if enough dirt is moved from under one side, that block is going to crack and then the tank is going to be unlevel. A good rain could come along . . slim chance, but it could happen .. and all that loose dirt will wash away.
Vince hauled a bunch of rocks over and put them around the tank to stop the digging.
Who ever thought keeping chickens out of trouble could be so much work?

I hear you on chicken digging. The holes are deep enough to break an ankle or at least give a good sprain. We fill them in but they excavate it again and then some. If the chickens had helped you dig for worms they would have had a nice snack before you could have plucked that wriggly worm. Glad you saved the oil tank.

One day after watching our chickens dig and move a great deal of earth my husband seriously speculated that chickens may have had something to do with the construction of the pyramids. It is believable!

I always wish so much we could keep chickens here. Plenty of space for it in our area, but the HOA adamantly refuses. They are worried about the coyote and fox colonies living in the area wanting to spend more time at the houses. So I just have to enjoy people’s sharing about theirs. This post really made me chuckle. Who would think chickens could threaten this tank? So funny. 🙂
