This morning Vince and I had planned to eat breakfast and run to town. We got to talking and first thing we knew, it was after 10, we hadn’t had breakfast and neither of us had showered so it was 11 when we had breakfast and noon by the time we left home. So much for getting an early start!
We had a fun day. Every day I look more forward to retirement. No schedule. No plans. Most days will be just whatever we feel like doing . . just like today.
First stop was Tractor Supply for chicken feed. On to United for fruit. Final stop was Aldi. My find of the day was Apple Pie Bars.
They are so good! They were on sale – four bars for 75¢. That’s less than 20¢ per bar! They only had one package left.
Once we got back home, I spent several hours working in the greenhouse.
My tomatoes aren’t going to win any awards but they’re alive and I’m about 90% surprised about that. It was hard (and expensive) to keep the greenhouse warm enough on those single digit nights.
The lettuce is producing like crazy. It likes the cold temps . . not the 2° but it never got down below probably 28° in the greenhouse. That’s the fourth pot of lettuce I’ve grown this winter and I planted two more this afternoon. By March 1, if Vince tills up a spot in the garden, I can plant lettuce in the ground. I tried planting it in my front flower bed but the rabbits found it.
I plant whatever type lettuce seeds I have on hand.
These seeds say they make “cute little heads”. I haven’t planted those before so I’m hoping they make “cute little heads”.
There’s one tray that got planted. I moved the new pots over by the outside wall so they’ll get more sun.
I planted cilantro seeds. It will come up volunteer in the garden but as soon as it gets halfway warm, and that happens very soon here, the cilantro bolts. I’m going to put some of these in pots and maybe I can keep them in shady spots and have cilantro a little longer.
I planted some dill. I’m hoping Vince will build up a kitchen garden for me close to the house where I can have some herbs. We’ll have to put a chicken wire fence or something to keep the rabbits and deer, and maybe Big Foot out of it.
See my devil’s backbone growing back there? It’s doing great. My mom lost some of hers to the cold weather they had so I told her I’d give some of this back since she gave it to me but she said she still has one big plant left. All of mine have a little damage but they’ll make it.
I love playing in the dirt!

My heart skipped a beat when I saw the package of lettuce seeds. I’ve never heard of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, but I’m definitely familiar with Mansfield, MO. My dad was born and grew up in Mansfield and I spent many happy hours visiting my grandparents there. I’m at my mom’s in Springfield, MO as I type this, just about an hour west of Mansfield. It’s a small world sometimes.

If you like pumpkin Aldi has also carried Pumpkin Pie Bars. They are yummy, too! My husband and I didn’t think we would like them, but we tried them and got more of both.

Your pictures of the green house make me wish I didn’t decide to re-energize my raised beds this year. But I have to do it instead of a garden. New soil, and nutrients so next year’s crop will be great and a good harvest. Good luck on all your gardening !
