Someone, please help me.
My friend brought me this from a bakery in Katy, Texas. She doesn’t know what it is or, maybe she knows what it is and won’t tell me because she knows if I can find a recipe, I’m going to make a dozen of them and eat them all . . the same day I bake them!
H
Here’s my feeble excuse at describing it. It’s like a big roll . . the size of about a 9″ pie pan. The bread part has the texture of a soft pretzel but a little sweeter. The filling . . I don’t know but it kinda tastes like a hardened sugar cookie dough.
Somewhere, above or below the filing, or maybe above and below the filling, there’s a thin, creamy layer.
I was hoping Vince didn’t like it and I could have the whole thing to myself. This is about the best thing I’ve ever had in my whole life . . except for crawfish. 🙂
I want more. I want a lot more! I have absolutely no idea what it is. Please help me so I an find a recipe! I hope I’m not sounding like the desperate sugar addict that I truly am!
Thank you!

Call the bakery!
Robin says
Is it some kind of kolache?
Claudia Wade says
Judy – could it be a variation of baklava?
Judy Laquidara says
No. It’s yeasty and not the flaky dough like baklava.
Tina in NJ says
Baklava has nuts and honey and layers of phyllo, so I don’t think that’s it. (I’m half Greek.)
Connie Halverson says
Judy, take a look at Beehive Cake recipe at Food Network. Maybe similar? Good luck!
Robin Crittenden says
Looks like a cream cheese cake, possibly
shirley bruner says
does it have almond filling? if so….i want some, too.
Judy Laquidara says
No. It isn’t almond.
Joan says
I want to know too! It sure looks yummy! You should find the recipe, perfect it, then send it to all your blog readers for our feedback on your success! : )

Here here. 🙂

It’s not an almond paste filling is it?
Judy Laquidara says
No, it isn’t almond paste. It is close in texture but it isn’t almond tasting at all.
Dottie says
Maybe a Bee Sting cake?!?!?
Judy Laquidara says
That’s kinda close but not it.

I think you need to google and see if you can figure out if the bakery in Katy, TX has a website, and just maybe they have a menu online. Looks yummy!
Denise says
maybe something like this? https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20160225/lakeview/chicago-needs-st-louis-gooey-butter-cake-graces-gooey-founders-say
Judy Laquidara says
No, it isn’t cake of any type. I’ve made the gooey butter cake for years and it is delicious.
melissa says
Kinda like this but without the “crumble”?? And if this isn’t the same cake, it is absolutely delicious. Mildly sweet and oh so good.

It looks like a Mexican bread that I get at out local Mexican bakery. It’s even cut in the same shape.

The texture sounds very much like a Bee Sting Cake (Bienenstich is traditional name) not super sweet but more dense than a cake we’d normally bake. The only difference is the one you have a picture of differs in that those I have had are split across and then a thick layer of filling that starts using whipping cream, but it ‘s not sweet. Another difference is those I have had have a different texture on the top as they aren’t smooth, but, ugh, hard to describe. Those I’ve had also have an sliced almond glaze on the top. The one you have could be a slightly different version however. Using Google Images, do a search for the Bienenstich. There are a couple that look more like yours without the thick layer of filling, although they do have an almond top.
My future DIL loves that cake. I’d never heard of it before but the only bakery that make it that I know of is more than 2 hrs from here. When she goes to her Dad’s for her birthday he always buys her that cake. I’m sure given the way you have described how much you like what you received, is exactly like me when I had the first bite of her cake. SOOOOOOOOOOOO Good.

I think it is a kuchen…something we always pronounced as koo-ka. Usually a cream cheese or a buttery filling. A German pastry…fairly common in my area.
Barbara says
It looks like a Galette des Rois, that is, a French three kings cake, but traditionally that cake has an almond filling.
It might be a Kouign-amann, generally I’ve seen them made in a individual pastry size, about the size of a muffin tin, but they can also be 8-9 inches and the size of a cake, which would give the wedge shaped piece like your photo.

My sister lives in Katy I’m going to forward it to her….. maybe she knows

See if your friends will tell you the bakery and I will go there and see if I can find out for you. Katy is about 15 minutes from my house. Katy has grown so much I wouldn’t know where to start looking.
