Have you ever heard of brazzle beans? I am 100% sure I have “brazzle” spelled incorrectly but I’ve tried every possible version I can think of and Google has confirmed that I have no idea what I’m talking about.
When Vince was in college, back in the roaring 20’s I think it was, he lived in a frat house and they had a cook.
Yes, that was a very long time ago . . Vince lived in a frat house and the cook made “brazzle beans” and Vince, through the years, has requested brazzle beans. I’ve googled. I’ve asked other people and no one knows what he’s talking about. Vince said it was basically pork & beans and ground meat. No! I’m not eating the gross storebought pork and beans in a can with ground meat. There has to be more to it than that but, if I were the one cooking for a bunch of crazy frat guys in college, canned pork & beans might be a great meal.
Speaking of times long, long ago, I think most of you know that Vince and I met on the internet. It was purely accidental . . we never used one of those dating sites. I don’t even know if they were around back in 1994.
As you also know, I save everything and this is the very first email he sent me . . 23-1/2 years ago. Now that was a long time ago too.
OK . . if anyone has heard of brazzle beans or anything that sounds remotely like brazzle beans or anything that has some kind of beans and ground meat, I would certainly appreciate some help here. Thanks!

Could this be it? http://www.geniuskitchen.com/recipe/hamburger-beans-197476

That’s probably it but I think I’ll make homemade baked beans and see what he thinks about that. Thanks. I wonder why they called it Brazzle Beans??
I believe that’s what we’ll have for dinner tonight.
Donna says
Yes, homemade would be eons better. No clue. I googled Brazzle beans with hamburger and this is what came up. No indication of brazzle in there. Enjoy!

Your “brazzle” beans sounds like my mama’s “slumgullian” beans…she browned ground beef, onions, and green peppers with a little garlic salt, poured off the grease, added a can of tomatoes and a couple cans of pork and beans and some ketchup, let it simmer a few minutes and dinner was served…we loved this stuff as kids!!!!
Judy Laquidara says
I googled and found some recipes. I may have to try that. Isn’t it funny how things from our past always seem like comfort food.
Sherrill Pecere says
That slumgullion doesn’t sound half bad!
Verna A. says
I’ve made something similar–we call it calico beans (I’ve also heard it called cowboy beans).
Judy Laquidara says
That’s what I was trying to think of and couldn’t remember the name! I’ve made those before and liked them. I’m going to make the calico beans next week. Vince doesn’t like kidney beans so I’ll sub pinto beans. When you look at the calico bean recipes, it’s really a lot like my homemade baked beans but I use all navy beans. Thanks!
Lynn D in NC says
I was going to suggest Brazil or Brazilian beans with ground beef.
Judy Laquidara says
Brazil beans came up in my search but the recipes I saw weren’t sweet and he said he remembers it being more like pork & beans.
smassena2014 says
Try looking up Brazil beans.
Judy Laquidara says
Those aren’t the same. I checked those before posting.
Robin says
Strange but that pic of Vince – he looks like Chad!
Toni says
I thought the same thing!
Dottie says
I thought the same thing as well!!

I checked in a few of my southwestern cooking cookbooks and didn’t see anything for “brazzle” beans. But, this recipe for cowboy beans from Tasty Kitchen sounds good – http://tastykitchen.com/recipes/sidedishes/cowboy-baked-beans/ Heck, it has bacon, molasses along with the beans and ground beef.
I wonder if the name comes from a cook or a student who came up with the recipe.
Judy Laquidara says
That’s pretty much the exact recipe I use for my homemade baked beans so I’m making them and adding ground beef. Who knows where the recipe came from. It may be something the boys called it and no one else knew it by that name. Thanks!!
Liz says
Did Vince like your version?
Terri Schanz says
I remember having this as a kid. We called it cowboy beans or ranch beans and most of the recipes I looked up with those names looked very similar to what I remember.

This one used to be on the back of the Campbell’s Pork ‘n Beans can: http://www.geniuskitchen.com/recipe/best-pork-n-beans-and-hamburger-casserole-200929

In MN we’d say “pork n bean hot dish”!
Jeri Niksich says
I mixed Bushes Baked Beans with ground beef and called it Chuckwagon. Funny I was wondering if you and Vince had ever thought of having kids together, you may have already explained it all before I started following you.
Penny says
Don’t know anything about razzle beans but Vince pictured in his younger years certainly looks like Chad! Amazing!
Laura Haynes says
Maybe the name came from someone’s pronunciation of Brazil beans. I can see how someone could read it as “Brazzle”.

Back when the kids were little we ate a lot of casseroles. There was one that I would love to find again but who knows where I got the recipe. And I only remember 3 of the ingredients……pork n beans, wagon wheel macaroni, and I think beef
wanda j says
We make something kind of like this but with ranch style beans.I don’t like pork in beans much may be why use ranch style. And since ranch style is a pinto bean another reason love pintos.
Sandy says
Too funny! My husband has been asking for the same thing only he asks for beans and hamburg. I have tried making it with homemade baked beans but it wasn’t the same so I just gave in and used Campbells and homegrown beef and enjoyed the ease of a fast meal. The simple things of life leave me time to sew.
Amy in PA says
LOL, not related to the beans but I mentioned before I use 3m scotchlite at work every day & I’ve made running group shirts for Noramco several years for a big race! How funny Vince worked for them too!
Anna says
Might be what we call Mama’s beans. Hamburger, pork&beans, onion, garlic salt, two tablespoons each ketchup, sugar and cider vinegar. It sounds weird but my kids loved them.
Linda in NE says
One of my fellow quilt group members once brought a wonderful bean & burger dish to our Christmas party that was very good. I know it had browned hamburger, baked beans, either pinto or kidney beans & maybe lima beans as well as some other stuff. I thought she called it Calico Beans, but when I asked her about it she couldn’t even remember making it. 🙂 I haven’t found a recipe that sounds the same. Maybe someday.
Kate says
Maybe a kid named Brazzle won the record for eating the most Brazzle beans without . . . you know, the way college boys do?
