Last winter, I’m not sure we had one night below 32° This winter . . good grief, it’s been cold. Don’t tell me it’s -182° where you live. I know and I don’t live there. This winter has convinced me that even moving to Missouri would probably result in me freezing to death. I’m still having a hard time believing that we can have so many months of 100°+ temps and then it gets so cold. The middle of this past week, I think we were in the 70’s.
We’re going to have a day or two where it doesn’t get out of the 20’s. No! Mother Nature, haven’t you seen the signs? You can’t mess with Texas. This is seriously messing with Texas.
Tuesday our high is going to be 28°. If you don’t hear from me, it’s because I’m not getting out of bed on Tuesday. I’m staying in my flannel pajamas, wearing my wool socks, buried under the down comforter, with multiple quilts on top.
The most challenging thing I have to do this entire week is convince myself to go out and look at that propane tank. I’m scared to see how much propane we’ve used. I’m more scared to call and see how much it is per gallon right now. We still have not had a fire in the fireplace.
Vince says: We let out too much heat when we open the door to go out and get wood.
I think what Vince means is: I don’t want to go out in the cold and get the wood.
After all . . it’s two feet outside the door on the porch.
Right now, I don’t think I’ll complain about the heat this summer, but I know I will. How about I don’t complain unless it gets over 110°?
At least the heaters are all in position to keep the chickens and their water from freezing, to keep Cat warm and to keep the greenhouse warm. We’re not scurrying to get all that in place.
I know . . you wish it would warm up to 14° at your place. I’m sorry for complaining but that’s just too cold for us down here in Texas.

It HAS been cold and I thought we were going to have a warmer than normal winter again..I like those much better! But yeah, it has been warmer than lots of places! So glad I don’t live in the NE! YUCK! I have had a few fires and, in fact, had to go buy a little more to tide me over. I know I’ll have one a few nights this week. In the meantime, got the little heater running right beside my chair!! Costa Rica sounds real good about now!
Carolyn says
I agree…I would be happy if it never got below 75. I am really good between 90 and 95.
Erin says
Wow down there is out of the ordinary huh! Up here in NH it’s also out of the ordinary yesterday 55! But last week below zero! Blizzard before that so who knows what is up! I wouldn’t want your cold temps in Texas either Judy! Our gas propane is going up.. saying hold off right now filling tanks wait.. but geez way too cold.. ten degrees soon..
Carol says
Yes, we are preparing for ice/snow mix Tuesday. Husband is going down to Brady and check things at the farm (namely his game cam so he can watch what’s going on) but he decided not to stay overnight because of the possibility of slick interstate. So he’ll go down and back same day. Don’t wanna get caught in that mess. We’ve had lots of fires; perfect spot for yarny goodness. Glad you’ve got all the critters taken care of. Hunker down! I’m going to a sewing group, then home to hibernate.

I heard the other day, it was so cold in Florida that the iguanas were freezing and falling out of the trees. Seriously!! That sounds like a Dr Suess story.
Judy Laquidara says
I wonder if that’s true. It’s sad but . . weird too.
Kristin says
Sorry, Judy, but you have no sympathy from me! We had so many sub-zero days last week. When the weather creeped up into the twenties, it was like a tropical paradise! I was ready for my shorts and flip flops! =)
Mary Jo says
It is colder than normal here in my area of North Carolina as well…and as for of those who don’t feel sorry for me(us)…I live here because we usually have much more temperate weather. If I wanted cold I would have moved further north! Don’t like what you have? Move! It seems that around where I live there can’t be too many people left up north…they all live here now!
pattilynn9 says
Ouch! We paid $2.89 a gallon for propane last week. LOL’ing at Vince re: the door letting in sooo much cold air! Wouldn’t be a problem if he wanted to go to Wal-Mart…haha!

I’m not a big fan of cold, but I needed this weather last January/February when I was having rotator cuff surgery and had stocked up on button up flannel and fleece shirts to wear during my recovery. We had temps in the 50’s and 60’s, and I about sweated to death…those shirts are getting a lot of wear this year…LOL
Susan says
I’m with you, similar temperatures. If it had been this cold my first winter in TN, I wouldn’t be living here! I’m a wimp. I want my desert temps, and my desert!

I’d love it if all I had to do was walk out the door and pick up the wood to bring in. I’m the one at my house (that we heat with wood) that splits all that wood! I’m 62 years old, and the only one in the family that can split the wood for the wood stove. I don’t complain too much because the exercise is really making a difference in lowering my cholesterol, and it feels good to be able to get out there and do something, although I hate the cold!! (Hubby has a bad shoulder, so he can’t do it, but he can carry it in…) 🙂

We are excited that it will get up to 28 degrees by Thursday. It’s all relative
Judy Laquidara says
It’s somewhat relative but it’s a whole lot different when you live in an area where you actually experience winter every year. Here, I don’t think we had a freeze last year. We do get some cold but not a lot and we just aren’t equipped for it. Water pipes freeze. We have fruit trees that are “rated” for our zone but then when we have a couple of single digit nights, we love the trees that can’t take the cold. The power companies don’t do a lot to keep the trees trimmed over the lines because we so rarely have ice and then when we have just a little ice, and a few limbs breaking, we can have power out for days. Low temps, ice/snow that would have been nothing in MO can be a big deal here in the south. But, there’s nothing we can do about it but protect what we can protect and hope for the best.

Judy, I do understand, I’m sorry you are having such a cold winter. I was in Fl one year in Feb during a cold snap and couldn’t believe how miserable it was and I’m from Maine and am used to the cold. In the south the cold feels sooo different!
Amy (Waunaknit) says
Good thing you have those knitted sweaters to keep you warm!
Terri Schanz says
It is kind of relative. My son moved back to Michigan two years ago after 11 years in south Florida. The first winter, which was not a particularly cold one, he and his wife were freezing all the time and miserable. This winter, they’re taking it in stride and it has been colder than usual. So far, this year has been hard for me. I’ve been sick for 5 weeks, found out today I have pneumonia, and my husband has been laid up for months with a bad back. He can’t drive, so I have no choice but to go out in this weather, sick or not. Hoping this new antibiotic will finally kick this, but no matter how good I feel, or how long you’ve lived in a cold climate -12 is cold!! Last Thursday it was 62 and all the snow melted and there was water everywhere and flooded intersections. Yesterday it was 3, so all that water froze again, and is now covered with snow. It’s too cold for salt to work, and it snowed today so now the roads are snow covered ice. Turning corners is pretty much a controlled skid! Glad I know how to drive in it!!
