We went back to the house and met with the air conditioner man this evening. We had planned to replace both air conditioner and furnace units but we found out there’s only one return air vent on each floor and that was a deal breaker for Vince. Because of some super tall ceilings and stairs, sheetrock ceilings would have to be ripped out in several places to add more return air vents.
There were normal wear and tear things that needed re-doing or replacing but Vince and I had discussed the house and moving a good part of the day and seeing it again, knowing the return air vents were an issue, changed our feelings about it.
I did like the kitchen but those tile countertops would eventually have to be replaced.
The wood floors were pretty.
We had planned on taking down wall paper and painting rooms, which we could do ourselves but the bathroom fixtures were all tarnished or for some reason, the finish was gone . . maybe the water there, but there were 8 or 9 bathroom lavatories that needed the fixtures replaces, in addition to tubs and showers throughout the house.
Normal wear and tear I can accept and fix/update but holes knocked in walls, doors, and broken switch plates, glass broken out of interior doors .. I’ll never understand that kind of stuff. When I saw that someone had scraped up the beautiful handrail on the stairs, I said . . not for me. I knew Vince wasn’t going to consider it with the lack of return air vents so it was easy for me to walk away too.
We’re back to square one . . I’m leaning towards staying in Texas and adding on to the current house. Vince says he wants high speed internet and we’ll probably never have that where we live. Neighbors/high speed internet or no neighbors/slow internet. I’ll take slow internet every day of the week.
We’re going to drive around some more tomorrow . . you never know what you might find but my expectations are low.

So sorry it didn’t work out. But I agree with you, you don’t want a money pit! Those “little” things add up. Makes you wonder what went on in that house!!

The tile counters would been a deal breaker for me. Add in the lack of return air vents and uh-uh. How many bathrooms did that place have anyway?

I wish you were happy enough to retire where you are

I’m glad you were able to get inside this time and see what the whole picture was. That kitchen … I’d love to have that. But I wouldn’t want to clean 8 or 9 lavatories, personally! =)

Judy – the tile is terrible. But even worse is no gas stove! And the return air problems. Keep looking! We just have to have you someplace where you don’t have to drive over bridges! But that is fairly close to Vicky!!!

Did the retire move 8 years ago and tried to think about future age. We bought single story house and so glad because NOW I can no loner walk up stairs. I used to zip up and down them. Also can’t clean the large spacious house. We ended up moving near our daughter/sip and guess who now helps us get to doctor appointments.. ha. Lot to consider and we downsized much furniture and a full attic where things went up and we never saw or used it again. What will happen to Cat?
Good luck on it all. We moved states and leaving lifelong friends was tough too. I know you have moved several times and wish you the best on your decisions.see that my fingers can’t hit right letters either.. ha . With time it all falls down or OFF.
