Zwolle, Louisiana is known, at least around these parts, for it’s tamales. My grandparents’ place was maybe 15 miles from Zwolle and as often as possible, when my grandparents knew we were coming, they would have tamales for us. If they didn’t have them here already, it wasn’t long til my parents ran up to Zwolle and got them.
Getting tamales was on my agenda for Thursday, the day we arrived here, but it was about 3 p.m. by the time we could have gotten there and I knew our favorite place would be out of tamales by then. So, yesterday, the main thing I wanted to do besides see the house in Texas, was get tamales.
The tamales I make are good but they aren’t this good!
We got 3 dozen regular and 1 dozen hot (for Vince). He kept saying “I don’t like them as much as you do!” We got to the car and he said “Do you want to find some place we can go and sit and eat them?” I said “Yes . . like right here in the car!” so we did . . we sat right there and ate tamales. Vince said “These are good! They’re damned good!” Then he said “I think I’ll go back in and get more! I think he got 3 dozen more regular and 3 dozen hot so we should have enough tamales to last us a while. I’m betting we go back and get more before we leave. One cannot have too many tamales in the freezer, especially when they’re as good as these are.

Zwolle tamales are the BEST!! I used to live in Shreveport and we had a camp house at the south end of Toledo Bend. What a lucky thing that we had to drive right through Zwolle to get to the camp!

As a kid growing up in Bossier City, I went to the Zwolle Tamale Festival every year. I do stop and get Natchitoches meat pies every time I head home to see my parents.
