While looking at yarn on Ravelry . . not to buy but to see the ratings on yarn from my stash that I want to use, I came across this excellent information from Cascade about superwash wool.
Even though I had somewhat of an understanding about superwash wool, these few paragraphs pretty much sum up the care that needs to be given when using superwash wool.
Superwash is not my preference but for Addie or anything that I’m not sure how much care will be given to the project, I almost always go with superwash wool.
And because there’s almost always an exception. I do love Malabrigo Rios and it’s 100% superwash. It’s one of the most inexpensive yarns that I love. It knits up beautifully, holds its shape better than most superwash wools and the colors are great.
There’s so much to learn about wools . . any natural knitting fiber really. I seem to spend more time shopping than researching but maybe that will change in 2018.

I love superwash wool, I use it almost exclusively anymore. I do have a ton of wool fiber a farmer gave me that I spin & dye when the mood hits me but then I know I’m making something I really love that I’ll have to take such care with…well, it’s so much easier to toss a hat or whatever in the washer, lol. I made my boyfriend a fair isle hat with acrylic (which just makes my hands ache when I’m knitting it) but I’m so glad I did, it has to get washed a lot, I found it on the lawn the other day when it fell out of his truck, lying in the mud! Next time I’m making him one with superwash but I doubt it’ll hold up as well as that plastic yarn.
