One of my Gift Along projects is Shallows Mitts. I was attracted to them because the thumb is simply an opening and not the gusset type thumb most mitts have. I don’t like the way those fit and I don’t like making that little tube/gusset.
When I started reading the pattern for Shallows Mitts and realized they were worked flat and seamed, I almost changed my mind about making them but I’m so glad I went ahead.
They’re both knitted, have been soaked and are blocking now. I think they will be dry before I go to bed and I’ll seam them up and see if I still love them as much as I think I will.
The yarn is Miss Babs’ Yummy 2 Ply. The color is White Peppercorn, which I love! There was just a bit of this yarn left over from another project. I think I started with 35 grams. I looked at the pattern requirements, did some calculating, went down a needle size because I know my knitting is usually too loose. Once I finished the first mitt, I weighed it and weighed the amount of yarn that remained and I had used 17 grams on the first mitt so I had about 18 grams left for the second mitt. I was sweating it! I’m pretty sure I have another skein of White Peppercorn around here somewhere but I wasn’t wanting to go digging.
It all ended well, I finished the second mitt with just a couple of yards of yarn remaining. That’s what I call putting the entire skein to good use.

If you’re in need of a pair for someone using a heavier yarn – I made Robin by Susan Venable for the GAL last year (and she’s a designer again this year) which are mock cables and seamed also with just the opening slit for the thumb. I’m with you on the thumb issue – I prefer just the slit opening. I also prefer knitting mittens and mitts flat too so I’ll have to check out the pattern you used.
