My friend, who has the cookbook, A Few of My Favorite Things, posted a recipe on Facebook the other day for Fall Fig Muffins. Of course, I had to stop right then and make them because everything he cooks is always amazing. Just as I expected, they were so good. It took 10 of our big figs to make 1 cup of chopped figs so I’ve been freezing 10 big figs to a zipper bag so we can have these muffins after the figs are gone for the winter.
The recipe will make 12 regular size muffins. I had some smaller muffin pans and one large pan so I ended up with 6 full size muffins and 10 smaller muffins.
Not everyone has access to fresh figs but I’m wondering how chopped dates might work in this recipe. I haven’t tried it so I’m not recommending it but . . just wondering about it. These muffins are good enough that I would be out searching for figs or a fig substitute if I couldn’t get my hands on some.
Here’s Steve’s blurb about the muffins from Facebook: “Making muffins is the perfect dish to make when figs first ripen and there is not enough to make a batch of preserves or jam. Fig Cake taste using fresh figs, These muffins are so good you will want to freeze figs to make these again.”

URGH! My husband came home last night and decided to check my fig trees, came back for a container, and then proceeded to clean off a couple dozen that were nearly perfect (I knew they were there – was planning on picking them today after he left for work). Of course, he sat and ate them all watching tennis. Hopefully it’ll get warm enough this week to brown up another dozen or two. If not, I do have dates, maybe I’ll give that a try today.

My fig tree produced three fruit this year. Needless to say they didn’t make it out of the garden. Maybe next year i’ll be able to make some muffins.

I either show my age or my ignorance in most discussions so here goes …where do I find figs? As you may know, not many grow here. Would figs be on grocery shelves near dates? You have made me think I need to try something besides fig newtons!

I think if they don’t grow in your area, they’re going to be hard to find. Before our tree started producing, I found some fresh ones in the grocery store for $12.99 per pound. Even as much as I love figs, I wouldn’t pay that.

I need to see if I can find some figs. I do not remember ever eating any in my life. But the muffin recipe makes me want to find some.

Just noticed, does the Buttermilk go with the rest of the wet ingredients? The first combination??

Yes, thank you. I fixed the recipe.
