When Rita first came here, we took her to the vet to get her checked, scanned for a microchip and get her required shots. A few days later, we went down to Ag Mart with her to get a harness because we only take her out on a leash. She arrived here with a cute collar but we felt it was safer to have her in a harness. Vince decided he HAD to go to the grocery store so I said fine . . I’ll stay in the car with Rita and you can go in the store.
I had never had a dog that needed to have their glands expressed. Apparently her glands had never been expressed and when she got nervous in the car, while Vince was in the store, she let loose! Oh, my . . if you’ve never smelled that . . I hope you never do! I was about to die in the car. I’m not sure which one of us smelled worse. I cracked the door a little to try to let some fresh air in. Some older man was parked next to our passenger side and when he went to his car, he stopped to talk to Rita. I’m sure when he stuck his nose near my car, he thought one of us needed serious help. I was so embarrassed.
Vince came back to the car and when he opened the door . . well, I won’t tell you what he said but he couldn’t believe the smell. Thanks, Vince! I’ve been sitting here with it for 30 minutes! All the way home, Vince had his window down, trying to take in fresh air from the outside. That was one trip with Rita that we will never forget!
She’s a much better traveler these days. We make sure we get her glands expressed every couple of months.
She’s a calm little sweetheart when we travel with her. She has her own little bed that we keep in the car and she’s pretty happy to stay in her bed. If I’m driving by myself with her, I let her sit in the passenger seat. She doesn’t weigh enough to activate the air bag but when I’m in the passenger seat, I won’t let her sit with me because, in the unlikely event the airbag goes off, she would be injured. She’s pretty flexible .. she’ll stay wherever we ask her to say. That’s a whole lot different from what old Speck does . . whatever he wants to do or someone gets bit!
We love our little Rita!

She sure is a cutie!

We think so and even more important, she’s so sweet! She’s been to 5 different vets in the last six months and every one comments on how sweet she is. Only one of those vets is familiar with Speck. I think they would all have to know Speck’s disposition to understand how much we appreciate Rita.

Well!! I wondered why the anal glands had to be expressed so I googled it. Gag. It must be hard to have to keep up with that. She looks like a sweet doggie.

My poor dog ended up with a ruptured anal gland it was terrible poor thing. We had no idea it was a problem it just ruptured. We had his glands checked every couple of months until he passed.

We had two sweet chihauhau one had gland problems one didn’t. Sampson glands would get infrected which I am sure was painful. So glad Rita has someone that is taking good care of her.
We had to make two trip a year at least that were 613 miles each way. The boys were great travelers. We did like you guys and had a bed between the seat. Sampson would sleep in the bed most of the time but Rocky wanted to be held like a baby on you shoulder. That is a long trip hold a little one on your shoulder. Sure do miss them. Had to believe how they can steal your heart.

Rita reminds me of that old Virginia Slims ad – you’ve come a long way baby. I remember the stories when she first found y’all and the eating acorns, etc. She is a sweetie and I’m glad she found you and Vince to show her what love is all about.
