Edit: I found out what it is. It’s called Earth Star Mushroom. If the link doesn’t work, google “earth star mushroom” and click on “images”. Some of them are gorgeous! I found it by googling “blooming mushroom central Texas”. I’ve never seen anything like it and yet some of what I read said they’re common. Have you ever seen one?
I’ve been watching this thing for a few days. I didn’t see it coming . . it wasn’t like it was in one form and then “blossomed” into this. When I first saw it, it pretty much looked just like this.
The other night I told Vince . . I’m taking my phone out to take a picture of this weird thing growing. He said “What is it? I saw it too!” I told him I didn’t know. He thinks it’s some kind of mushroom. I thought it was like a big acorn and the outer skin was peeling away but it does feel more like a mushroom. I tried to get him him to eat it and see what happens but he wouldn’t. No . . really . . I didn’t try that. I would never eat, or let him eat, an unknown anything. He would be way less likely to do it than I would and I wouldn’t so . . don’t worry about us eating a weird mushroom.
Anyway . . I said “I don’t even know how to google that thing” and he said “Ask your blog readers . . some of them will know!”
So, dear blog readers, what are those things? Thanks!

I’ve lived in Texas all my life (60+) never saw anything that looked like that either. I love looking for mushrooms in our area. I’ve found some of the odds ones. Once I found a hole patch of reddish orange one. They looked fake but weren’t I brought them home so I wouldn’t be called nuts. These are cute. If they were here I would say they are due to all the water we’ve had but it is different where you are. They say mushrooms grow where dirt /soil is good I don’t know if that is true or not. Keep your eye open others may appear in same area. Thanks for another memory jog of found mushrooms..

I’ve never seen anything like that either. Isn’t the internet wonderful how we can get answers to so many things so quickly?! Love those mushrooms!

Look for a mushroom face book group and join it! I have lots of fun looking at mushrooms and fungus found in the northwest.

May have been imported with a plant you brought home or a bird pooping out seeds or spores.
