If you’ve never made homemade flour tortillas, I wish you would try it. They can be cooked on a skillet on top of the stove, or on a gas burner outside (anything that gets hot enough to heat the skillet). All the ingredients are shelf stable and things we all can easily have on hand. They can be used with scrambled eggs, peanut butter, tuna salad – or just with butter or jelly. When you’re hungry and have nothing in the house to make a quick meal, a homemade tortilla could be amazing. They can be brushed with butter, then sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon for a tasty treat.
Seeing what’s happening in Houston, and even reading all the complaints from southwest Louisiana folks about not being able to get bread, had me wondering how many people have never tried making homemade flour tortillas.
Please try it . . just to see how good and how yummy they are. Here’s a basic recipe:

Seriously, all you need is flour, salt, water and a bit of oil.
Tina in NJ says
Judy, where do you use the oil? Add more water or oil a tsp. at a time? Thanks.
Jen says
You mix the water and oil into the flour.

I’ve been cooking on Coleman camp stove since the power has been out due to Hurricane Harvey. Almost out of bread. Tortillas I can cook in my cast iron skillet on the camp stove. Problem solved.

Ohhh I use the “L” word for my tortillas in place of oil… as in LARD and yep they are sooooooooooo good . I started making them years ago when we were broke and I had to feed the family. Beans, cheese and tortillas or ramens over mashed potatoes with chicken and vegetables. Yep one has to do what one has to do when there is very little money. Even now I make them and I think they are better than the store unless you go to a tortillaria – a place that makes them- I will buy those once in a while when I am lazy.

I make them all the time–we love the homemade ones instead of those thick, doughy tasting things at the grocery stores. I bought a tortilla press but it doesn’t make a big enough tortilla so I just use the rolling pin.

I haven’t made tortillas in ages. I used to make them regularly. I’ll have to start again. Do you make corn tortillas too? Those always sounded a harder to get to come out right.

My grandma made homemade flour tortillas every single day. She could produce a batch in record time, and they were delicious!
