I love it when chickens first start laying and I get eggs with double yolks. It takes them a little while to get it all figured out. This morning, the first egg I cracked had two yolks.
Our young hens have always given us a few double yolk eggs except the Buckeyes, which are our current main layers. Not a single double yolk eggs from of those Buckeye hens so I was really happy to get one from the Marans.
It doesn’t take much to make me happy and it was very nice to start my day with a smile!

that brings up a question. Is the only time you get double yolks from chickens is when they are new layers and their systems are getting adjusted? I always wondered what caused it. I have a friend that has chickens and now ducks. I love fresh farm eggs and am looking forward to trying the duck eggs too. i’ve heard they are richer tasting than chicken eggs.

Husband (grew up with chickens and a few head of cattle) says it has something to do with the amount of protein chickens are getting. Is he right about that? I don’t really believe him, but all we ever did was go get a dozen or so to “dress” where I grew up….so know nothing about raising them! We got a dozen eggs from a friend at church last week; the first one he cracked was a double yolk and he called me, ‘here’s your egg today’! I like them double too, Judy!
