We have some molting chickens. Oh, my .. they are looking naked. Molting is when they lose their feathers and grow new ones. Some chickens molt more than others. I’ve never had any molt as bad as these are. It’s perfectly normal for them to do it (or not do it) but when growing their new feathers, they need lots of protein and they stop laying so all the protein can be directed towards growing feathers.
There are only 3 or 4 of them that are molting and I think they’re embarrassed. I was having a hard time getting pictures of them.
I give them extra protein to help them along. Yesterday I made cornbread for them (in the bigger container . . the smaller one and the biscuits are for cornbread dressing for us).
For the chickens’ cornbread, I added chopped peanuts, sunflower seeds, flax seeds and extra eggs.
Before you start thinking I’m a wonderful chicken mama (which I am!), we have too many roosters and one was being aggressive.
For lunch today, we’re having chicken with cornbread dressing. One less rooster . . one yummy farm raised chicken dinner for us. We don’t do it often but when it needs to be done, we do it.

GAH! That’s something I couldn’t do..someone else would have to do it for me! And when I saw the first chicken picture, the first thing I thought was she looked embarrassed!! LOL Then you said that. Too funny!

You got to do what you have to do when you have chickens!
