Every day . . several times a day . . I go out to check eggs. I very carefully check the egg boxes for snakes but I don’t always look up over my head. Yesterday as I lifted the egg door and reached in to get eggs, I happened to look up and just over my head was this . .
These are good spiders to have around. I think their webs are so neat. I wouldn’t want the spiders to fall on my head though!

Amazing web “sewing” but I also would not want this on my head!

I had three of these beauties last year! One insisted on spinning her web across the front sidewalk from the house to the flower bed. I made the delivery people go to the back door! Sad that I haven’t seen one this year.

Interesting web; but good or bad, I hate spiders!

Is that all spider silk? She didn’t supplement with dental floss or thread? Wow, just gorgeous.

Female Argiope aurantia spiders tend to be somewhat local, often staying in one place throughout much of their lifetime. The web of the yellow garden spider is distinctive: a circular shape up to 2 feet (60 cm) in diameter, with a dense zigzag of silk, known as a stabilimentum, in the center.. . .A bite by Argiope aurantia is comparable to a bee sting with redness and swelling. For a healthy adult, a bite is not considered an issue. Though they are not aggressive spiders, the very young, elderly, and those with compromised immune systems should exercise caution, just as they would around a beehive.(wikipedia)

They are orb weavers. Like Cindy said, they generally lav people alone. They eat mosquitoes and gnats and small bugs. We have several around here in the back of the yard. Every once in a while they will spin their elaborate webs over my car and catch me or Frank in it.
