Turkey has never been one of my favorite deli type meats until . . I found the California Turkey Reuben at McAlister’s. I want it every day. Really, I want it twice a day. I usually get the “Choose 2” so I can get half a sandwich along with soup or salad. If Vince and I go together, along with drinks, it’s about $22. It’s not the $$, though it’s so much less expensive to eat at home . . it’s the trip to town. You know how I feel about leaving home.
When I was in Abilene to go to the doctor on Monday, all the places there to eat and I decided to go to McAlister’s. While eating there, I thought . . these would not be hard to make at home!
We also had yummy salads to go with the sandwiches.
With the lettuce all washed and ready to use, we’ve had salads twice a day every day this week so far. Yesterday’s salad had lettuce, red onion, avocado, tomatoes, boiled egg, walnuts, strawberries, cucumber, hemp seed kernels, salt, and pepper. I used a cilantro dressing and Vince used Thousand Island. I make both dressings almost every morning.
For the sandwich, it starts with rye bread, lightly toasted and a bit of Thousand Island dressing smeared on the bread.
I heat the turkey in a skillet and add it to the bread, then top with a slice of Swiss cheese. That goes under the broiler til the cheese gets soft.
Then I add coleslaw! That’s what makes it so good . . a little sweet and a little crunchy!
Add the top pieces of bread and we have a sandwich!
Actually we have half a sandwich for me and a whole sandwich for Vince. Yummy food. Quick and easy to make. We don’t have to leave home to get it! Win, win, win!

I always did like a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on it, when I was eating red meat.
I have wondered about salad dressings. I seem to remember you purchasing some, and salad dressing seems like a prime candidate for making your own. I have a chipotle-balsamic dressing I love, but I need to stop making it with olive oil, so that I don’t have to melt it each time I want to use it! (It makes more than one day’s worth.)

I’m in a stage where almost every meal is better with coleslaw… trying different recipes and loving all of them. McAllisters is a fav of mine too… will try the turkey ruben next time.
